Michael Sowerby achieve excellent
results in cycling
Michael
Sowerby has been a student at Stellenbosch University
since 2002, reading a BSc in Agricultural Economics
and Animal Sciences. While attending classes for 2
and half years, he found that his interests lay in
Animal Nutrition, but another passion developed at
the end of 2002. Cycling became a big part of his life
then. It started out as triathlon but after eight months
he converted to full time cycling.
He has gone form strength to strength in the sport and
received University honours in 2003 for cycling and
has been selected for the South African Student Sports
Union (SASSU) team for two years. He was selected to
represent the team in this year’s 4 th World
Student Champs in Belgium . Michael has also ridden
in South Africa ’s premier stage race, the Giro
del Capo for two years in a row, which ends with the
Argus Cycle Tour.
He races for the GT Edu-Loan Maties team, and race on
the local leagues almost weekly and then often in a
plane to other parts of South Africa to race on the
national circuits.
Michael’s most recent results for 2006 have been
as follows:
- Selected for World Student champs, held in Belgium
18th at Time Trial; 32nd in Road Race
- 2nd at Bertcon Race, George
- 3rd at Falcon Sport 3 day tour
- Winner final stage of Falcon Sport 3 day tour
- 4th at Cycle Boys Benoni Race
- 5th at Tour Durban Kermesse
- 2nd at Vigne n Vigne MTB Race
- Western Province Time Trial Champ
- 8th at South African Time Trail Champs
- 12th at South African Road Champs
