Admission requirements for university study based on the National Senior Certificate (NSC)

To study at Stellenbosch University based on the new national curriculum for the Further Education and Training Phase, you are required to:

  • Have obtained a National Senior Certificate(NSC) as certified by Umalusi
  • Have achieved an aggregate of at least 4 (50 - 59%) in four subjects designated for university study
  • Have written out of Stellenbosch University's Access Tests (ATs) those specified for the program(mes) you wish to apply for
  • Have achieved an aggregate of at least 50% for the ATs and NSC combined in a ratio of 40:60

Specific admission requirements for BSc in Biodiversity and Ecology and BSc in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology

  • ATs: Mathematics, Physical Science and Academic Literacy (Afr. & Eng.)
  • Afrikaans or English (Home Language or First Additional Language) 4
  • Mathematics 4
If you take Mathematics 114, 144 and Physics 114, 144:
  • Physical Sciences 4

If you take Mathematics (Bio) 124 and Physics (Bio) 178:

  • Physical Sciences 4 OR
  • Physical Sciences 3 and Life Sciences 4

BScHons in Microbiology  
 

Admission requirements:
A BSc degree with Microbiology as a major, i.e. Microbiology 314 and 344 or 354. An average final mark of at least 60% for Microbiology 3 is required. The number of students taken in each year is limited by the number of places available in the research laboratories. Additional work may be required where a prospective student's background is lacking.

Duration and commencement:
The programme usually runs for one year and commence one week before the official beginning of classes.

Programme composition
The programme includes formal modules (MKB 733, 763, 774) as well as seminars, self-study and experimental work (MKB 772). The programme is subject to continuous assessment with an oral examination at the end.

MSc in Microbiology  
 

Prerequisite:
A BScHons degree in Microbiology or closely related subject.

Further information:
Research is carried out on an approved project and a thesis is submitted which must satisfy the requirements of the appointed examiners. In addition, extra study on specific subjects may be required where background is lacking. Any additonal work is decided individually for each student by the supervisor(s) involved. An oral examination and/or thesis presentation are/is required.

PhD in Microbiology  
 

Prerequisite:
A MSc degree in Microbiology or closely related subject.

Further information:
A dissertation on the results of independent scientific research is required.
