On Sunday, 4 March 2012, 100 Stellenbosch Thuthuka students, a bursary group of The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants and a registered society at Stellenbosch University embarked upon their annual community service under the umbrella of “Making A Decision to Make A Difference’. This expression encompasses what the students intended to achieve and plants the seeds for all projects going forward.
The event was in conjunction with The Children's Hospital Trust, the Fundraising Arm of the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, who assists the Hospital to upgrade and maintain its buildings and equipment and to develop its professional staff. All funds raised were in aid of the Red Cross children’s Hospital medical Ward B, which is a Medical Ward treating general medical patients, patients with infectious diseases and chronic illnesses. Patients have illnesses such as Dehydration, Pneumonia, Meningitis, Tuberculosis, Retroviral, Cardiac, Anaemia and UTI’s. This is one of the last two wards in the Hospital that needs to be upgraded.
The Thuthuka students, all wearing red Thuthuka t-shirts, were responsible for the first water station in the Sunshine D Polar Ice-Cream 10km Big walk, the third biggest outdoor activity event in Cape Town that took place on the Sea-Point Pavilion. Part of the activities was to distribute water to all walkers as they passed the station, cheering the walkers on which was pleasant to watch and experience as the students sparked laughter and enthusiasm among many participants of the race. On occasion, the students also entertained little children passing by with parents and were able to bring a few smiles to the little ones as well. On several occasions the students were also drenched with water by die walkers. Two BAcc Honours students, Sharne Damons and Jessica Groenewald were also participants in the big walk, hence Thuthuka represented in all spheres of the event.
Michellene Williams, the Chairperson of the Stellenbosch Thuthuka society and a Honours BAcc student said, “We were honoured to have been a part of this great annual event. Children are our future, and future CAs(SA). As SAICA, through their wish of inspiring success and future CAs, we wish to plant the seeds of making a difference, hence our decision to participate on Sunday. As future CAs(SA), we strive not only to have a life of success, but our wish is that one lives a life of significance. Even if the influence of kindness and this decision is not seen with immediate effect, the seeds have been planted, the active decision made and from that a wonderful difference will be ignited and through our continuous effort it will have a lasting impact.”
With this, may it serve to each student at Stellenbosch University to go MAD- make a decision and make the difference you wish to see in the world

With the recent international breast cancer awareness program held during the month of October, Stellenbosch Thuthuka pledged its unwavering support of this worthy cause. Stellenbosch Thuthuka students showed up proudly in their white or pink T-shirts with their pink ribbons, which they wore for the duration of breast awareness month. The pledge to try to make others aware of breast cancer.
This project has certainly attracted the attention of many, as people whether at home or at campus, who were not aware of it, would regularly ask why the students were wearing pink ribbons. This afforded the students another opportunity to inform others. Research showed that Breast cancer is internationally recognized as one of the growing illnesses to affect not only women but also men have been diagnosed with it as well. It not only infects the victims but affects their friends and family as well. Some Thuthuka students could certainly relate as they had close family members who either has had or is suffering from cancer.
From the above actions, it is evident, that to make a change you need to be that change. To make a difference, big actions are not always a necessity, but a series of small actions with a lasting impact.
This article was written by Nicole Radloff (Thuthuka group leader). The SAICA Orb Ball Challenge recently visited Stellenbosch University and provided a wonderful opportunity for interaction between the brand and students while also giving us the chance to have some fun. Stellenbosch Thuthuka definitely showed up loud and proud, kitted out in Thuthuka gear and supporting our fellow Thuthukans.
By simple definition an orb ball is basically a huge plastic ball with space inside for one person to either roll around in, tumble over while trying to make it through an obstacle course or for the more experienced participants to run in while actually completing the course. For the brave who actually accepted the challenge there were lots of support from the sidelines as Thuthukans not participating showed up to cheer and provide some spirit for the day. Team Thuthuka were in it to win it as Rodriguez Robertson completed a quick time in the early on and we thought that we were sure to win but unfortunately another student did it faster! This did not deter Thuthukans as one by one they stepped up to take the challenge determined to beat the frontrunner.
The event definitely got to drawing more and more attention as passersby stopped to see what the hype was all about. A few lecturers even came over and with a bit of persuasion by Thuthukans they too took up the challenge and I must admit that they were in fact worthy opponents. Mr Johann Du Plooy showed that auditing lecturers are not boring people and that auditing lecturers can take up any challenge. At times when Thuthukans hit the first obstacle it seemed that they would just not make it through but perseverance helped them to succeed. This is one lesson that many of us learned and it showed that picking yourself up and trying harder in order to prevail is worth the effort. Many that took part including supporters agree that it was an exhilarating activity and entertaining to watch. It surely amounted to a huge adrenalin rush and got those hearts pumping.
At the end of the day there were three winners, so here is congratulations to:
- Heyno Kraft - Overall Winner (R1000)
- Johann Du Plooy - Overall Winner in the lecturer category (R500)
- Rodrigues Robertson - Overall Winner in the Thuthuka category (R500)
The main objective of the event was to showcase the CA (SA) brand as one that will enable you to overcome obstacles in life. The Orb Ball itself represents the CA (SA) brand and the obstacle course represents the challenges that may arise in life but that you can overcome with the CA (SA) designation. This challenge definitely met the objective and though it is probably not for everyone such as claustrophobics, I think that most people would agree that it was an interesting way of showcasing SAICA.
Michellene Williams, a third year BAccounting Thuthuka student was the only student from Stellenbosch University to be selected to attend the annual Student Leadership Summit. The purpose of the summit was to create an opportunity for young business leaders to network with the high profile movers and shakers of the corporate world.
It all started with writing an essay of 1000 words on one of three topics. Her essay was entitled “Your brother is uncertain regarding his future and is considering opting for Maths literacy instead of Maths.”
From a wide number of entries, twenty-five students from across South Africa were selected to attend the summit. The event was held at the FNB Conference and Learning Centre in Johannesburg on 12 – 14 August 2011
Among the business leaders in attendance was Chantyl Mulder a SAICA Senior Executive: for Professional Development, and Transformation and Growth, Terence Nombembe the Auditor General of South Africa. Others in attendance include Graham Terry who is the Head of the CEO office for SAICA, The Managing director and co-founder of Softline Pastel, Mr Steven Cohen, the chairperson of the SAICA board Helen Thrush and many more attendees highly regarded in their respective fields of work.
The main purpose of the summit is to emphasise the flexibility, potential and status of the South African chartered accountancy qualification, thereby inspiring the students to persevere with their studies and to complete their official training requirement. The summit also creates a platform for students to network with each other and other business leaders. SAICA sponsored the summit because they want to create future business leaders. Communication and the ability to write is a critical skill.
Michellene commented, “Even though I did not win the competition, it provided an invaluable opportunity to engage, network with wonderful leaders of our time who are committed and enthusiastic about the CA-profession. Their enthusiasm is contagious, my fellow students I interacted with were of a high calibre with whom professional and personal engagement is a privilege and intellectually stimulating as is with the business leaders. I will always be grateful for the opportunity and treasure it.”
Michellene was one of four students who concluded the prestigious event with a thank you speech and address. In her address, she thanked SAICA and wrapped up the thank you speech with the following words: “from the student delegates and to the student delegates: three expressions with which we would like to leave you: ‘if it was not hard everyone would do it. It is the hard that makes it great’ by Tom Hanks and this encompasses the road to qualifying as a CA. Yes, it will be hard and most things in life is, but remember these words as in the end it’s always worth the diligent effort in pursuit of your realistic goals. As our following expression follows ‘ they think they can because they can’ let us not only think but KNOW we can as the leaders here today and SAICA has shown faith and belief in us knowing we can do it.
Ismail Gouws, a Thuthuka third year student, took part in Maties Talent held part of Matie Week. Ismail and his dance partner Nomsa Phiri (Nerina residence) reached the top 11 in the finals. During a spectacular dance routine in the final, they were awarded second place behind, LUMA Musiek.

At the beginning of 2011, control of the Stellenbosch Thuthuka program was handed over to the Thuthuka group leaders. They were made responsible for running the program and holding various initiatives and events.
These stories are written by the students in their own unedited words. “Blessed are those that give without remembering and take without forgetting" This is the expression that sparked enthusiasm and involvement among Stellenbosch Thuthuka students to give their best towards their collective community service project, with their corporate sponsors KPMG and Media24.
In 2010, Stellenbosch Thuthuka approached KPMG Cape town to collaborate on a community service project as part of the Stellenbosch Thuthuka students’ collective group project for the year of 2011. Thereafter, an intense search began to find a worthy cause on which to spend time and money for which a great benefit holds as well as to make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged individuals. This was also a means to foster a better relationship and expand communication links with one of Thuthuka’s sponsors and to improve firm interaction.
KPMG advised us on certain requirements on which they will base their selection of a project which were the following:
• R10000 is available to execute any plans
• A community or greater part thereof must benefit and not an individual
• They must be able to utilize their staff members
Side by side, Michellene Williams one of the student leaders responsible for the portfolio of Community service and Firm interaction, together with Mr Riaan Rudman, Project manager of Stellenbosch Thuthuka, narrowed down and ranked all the projects ready for KPMG’s approval. Various projects were considered. Eventually KPMG selected West Coast Winners Play School in Atlantis, in the area of Klein Dassenberg. This is a disadvantaged area, in which children get no physical or mental stimulation, are often times hungry. Job opportunities and transport facilities and money for transport are scarce.
Later Media24 came on board as a corporate sponsor providing R10 000 worth of educational books and toys. As the financial need to the project was great, KPMG contributed a further R5 000 and the Stellenbosch Thuthuka raised a further R10 000, making the total contribution R35 000.
Through intense planning, preparation and continuous communication between the various parties, the small wendy house was thoroughly renovated on 31 March and 1 April 2011 by the students, KPMG and Media24 CSI staff members. The Thuthuka students went back a week later to finish some outstanding work.
The following was done to improve the structure substantially: a fence surrounding the wendy house was erected, the roofs and wall were insulated, and a jungle gym erected to provide physical stimulation, a lawn was laid. New educational books and toys were provided as well as tables and chairs to furnish the place, the structure was lifted to balance it and finally on the last day it was painted.
As co-coordinator of the project and communication link between the parties involved, Michellene Williams (3rd year student) said that from this project valuable lessons could be derived. “The project has taught me, as a student leader, the importance of delegation as all tasks cannot be completed by you, the leader as projects involve an immense amount of planning, administrative issues and executions of all plans. Communication is a key component to ensure that all the relevant parties are well informed, that correct information is transferred as well as that leadership and time management is crucial as too quickly it becomes hectic to juggle academics, work and extra-curricular activities. Things do not also automatically happen as students often think but it takes time and patience, therefore I respect our project manager Mr Riaan Rudman and Mrs Links.”
One of the students that participated in the event, Cameron Heynes gave his thoughts regarding this big event.
It is evident that being able to make a small difference is sufficient, as it does not take big events to change the world but merely a series of small actions made with the right heart's condition. Should the difference or effect be big or impact more lives, it is a bonus.
Following the completion of the project, the following feedback was obtained.
The following article was published by the Cape Times.
This joint project was co-sponsored by professional services firm: KPMG.

“Sport brings people together with the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat, the light of reflected glory and the humanity of a shared experience”.
As with all events, planning is very important. This was delegated to the group leaders responsible for social functions. Together with Mr Riaan Rudman they worked vigorously to ensure that everything would be spot on come the Sports day. It was decided that the sports day would have two competitions:
• a potjiekos competition and
• a Touchies-event.
The members of Thuthuka would be divided into four groups according to their year of study. This was surely going to spark some rivalry, which is always fun to watch.
The first event was to be the Touchies. This event was highly competitive and teams consisted of boys and girls. Those not playing cheered on their respective teams, hoping that it would have the desired effect on their players. While the teams were battling it out on the field, some members of their teams were starting with the Potjiekos. With the potjiekos competition it became clear that some people had never made a fire before. Many of the teams struggled to get their fires going. One team even withdrew from the competition because of this. Nonetheless 3 pots were finished and the best team won the Touchies.
The Honors students won the potjiekos competition as well as the Touchies event. Some say it’s because three out of the five judges were Honours students. I say, there’s no match for experience!
With the start of a new academic year and new faces in the Thuthuka Stellenbosch community, the first of many social events was held on the as part of an initiative to get to know each other better and socialize with our new members, and show them that being with Thuthuka is like have a family away from home.
The event was a sports day held at Stellenbosch campus on the grass at the back of Metanoia. There were four teams, consisting of the different year groups, ranging from first year students to honours students. There was some good competition between the different year groups, challenging each other with a touchies competition and a potjie-competition.
The touchies was a good way to work as a team and triumph over the other teams. The teams that worked together were the ones that played the most successful game. Communication was also an important element in the game, if there wasn’t a good strategy and communication between teams there was no way to outsmart the other team. The honours team even made themselves t-shirts to show some team spirit.
Two members of each year group were responsible to make the best potjie they can, which was judged afterwards. Every year group thought there year group's potjie was the best but in the end the judges had to make the decision.
There was a great “gees” from the team mates that supported there teams playing touchies, made me think back to those high school days.
We as team leaders had to organise who’s going to play touchies and who’s going to make the potjie and the colour of the team. But all this wasn’t possible without our team meets. There were minor problems here and there, but it was quickly sorted out. In the end we learned organisation skills and team leading skills. This is important in the business world.
In the end the day was successful, made new friends and had fun.
On the 16th of April students of Stellenbosch University were waiting apprehensively in front of the Faculty of Theology. As people passed by, curiosity got the better of them as they stopped, perplexed, their eyes fixated on the well dressed young men and women. Their faces said it all, “What are they up to?” One thing was for sure, not even Hollywood had anything on these students, they were outshining the stars.
These students was all part of ... Thuthuka.
The casino-like environment had an aesthetically pleasing effect on everyone. Furthermore, there were students who organised the food and set it out nicely for everyone to enjoy. The music and the dance floor were on fire when the “dancing shoes” came on. The following games were played: Domino’s, Cards, 30 seconds, Twister and Poker. There was also karaoke which was a lot of entertainment to everyone.
I have asked two Thuthukans how they had experienced the evening and both said that it was well-organised and everyone had fun by taking part in the games they like.
Baie dankie!”
The games evening committee learnt that if an event is organised properly, it can be a huge success and if we enquire as to what the whole Thuthuka group would be interested in, everyone can enjoy and partake in the social. Hard work and dedication is also something one would have to possess when organising something like a games evening.
In conclusion I would say that the evening was a very fun-filled evening that everyone enjoyed. Students had the opportunity to socialise, while enjoying various games, as well as poker. I would say the success of the evening arose from everyone partaking in the evening and the fact that there was something for everyone to enjoy.

Hulle was onlang by Scotsville Sekondêre Skool.

Hulle verantwoordelikhede is in drie portefeuljes verdeel nl.:
• Spanbou: reël van klein sosiale funksies asook sportaktiwiteite gedurende die jaar met die doel om ‘n eenheidsgevoel te bou;

TheDST/Thuthuka Maths and Science Development camp was held from 28 June to 5 July at the Cape Academy for Maths, Science & Technology in Constantia. This camp was one of many camps around South Africa. The South African Institute of Chartered Accountantsand theDepartment of Science and Technology gathered 198 top grade 12 learners from various schools in the Western Cape to contribute to development and learning and to enhance the learners chances for success in future years.
On arrival of the learners it seemed, the learners did not know what to expect. Many of the other learners rekindled old friendships, with friends they met while attending the 2008 camp. They knew what to expect. The camp was aimed at giving the learners the foundation that they need to prepare them for their examination and more importantly, taking them a step closer to reaching their aspiring goals of being one of the few learners in South Africa able to attend university, thereby utilising their talents. In her welcoming address, Ms Betty Abrahams (SAICA: Transformation manager) said, “The purpose of the camp is not only to assure academic excellence, but looks at development and transformation of young minds from a holistic perspective. As a selected learner, it is YOUR time to exhaust this opportunity, as most others only hope to be where you are”.
The learners were welcomed by the very enthusiastic camp leaders. The camp was managed by 20 university students from various universities across South Africa, working together to inspire these learners to reach for their goals and dreams and also pursue a tertiary education at university. The camp leaders were responsible for managing, planning and co-ordinating all the daily activities. Their most important role was to be role models to the learners, sharing their experiences, knowledge of tertiary education and providing learners with information on different courses they attend. Lazola Maliti, who is in his 2nd year of BAcc at Stellenbosch University, forewarned the learners about the everyday challenges he faces as a BAcc student. He also emphasized the importance of having a social life as “all work, no play once made Jack the dull boy”.
As in prior years the camp was packed with fun yet important development and learning activities, which challenged the learners physically and mentally.
• During the week the learners expanded their Maths, Science and Accounting abilities with lectures, tests and practical experiments.
• Various personal development and life skills speakers gave them guidance on their purpose in life, having better study and exam techniques and communicating assertively.
• The students saw the world from another perspective by being introduced to the Science World.
• The learners took part in various teambuilding activities, played various games and theatre sports and improvisation during the week, which culminated in talent show evening when the students showcased their talents that left the judges with difficult decisions to make.
• The last day of the camp was concluded by a career fair and awards ceremony with Freedom Hadebe (7de laan actor) as the Master of Ceremony, to reward the learners with their achievements.
The camp had a good balance between fun and education, each activity was fun and yet the learners gained something from every activity. Throughout the camp, student’s learned more about goals, purposes and motivations as important qualities that one needs to succeed in life. The camp emphasised the importance of students knowing their purpose in life and striving towards it. Maseka Dlamini, a learner from Hector Petersen High School said “For the very first time in my life, I feel as though I not only have the potential, but the will to excel in everything I do. I now understand that, in this world success will not be handed down to me, I must work towards it”.
The last day of the camp was filled with tears and laughter, and as the learners made their way to their respective destinations, the camp leaders knew that these learners would without a doubt, be tomorrow’s leaders. The camp created memories for everyone and life-long friendships were formed. Amanda Mpabanga a leader currently busy with her 2nd year in Bcom (Marketing) at NMMU (Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University) stated that “It’s so sad to see them go home. It is unbelievable that such strong bonds can be built over a period of one week. Looking at it more positively she added: “at least now we know that we made a difference and touched so many lives".

The following article was written by Raelene Adams, a second year Thuthuka student and the principle co-ordinator of the Stellenbosch Thuthuka community service project for 2009.
Thuthuka students from all year groups took time out of their rigorous BAccounting schedules to brighten the lives of some 40 pre-school children at a crèche in Jamestown. Being bursary holders from the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants and in line with the profession’s social responsibility, all Thuthuka students take part in community service. It was decided that the students would hold a project in which they collected money and that the proceeds would then be used to uplift the local community.
The need for proper development and stimulation in one’s formative years has been recognised by scientists and educators alike; consequently, it was decided that it would be most appropriate, that a crèche: Sonstraal in Jamestown would be the beneficiary of their collection, where young children could be positively affected. It was decided that rather than simply donation the money collected to the crèche, that they would take the time to spend a day and play with the children.
First on the agenda, was the fund raising. Over the June/July holidays, the Thuthuka students raised money in their home towns and returned with a total of R6000. The students also secured a corporate partner, the professional services firm, PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC), to match the amount raised.
With a budget of R12000, ideas were workshopped and included:
• cleaning the premises;
• painting and decorating the outside walls;
• providing books, food parcels, cutlery and crockery, educational games, blankets and storage containers and much needed equipment to the crèche.
The students started planning and arranging the project. The project was managed by the second year students; however, the organising committee consisted of students from all academic year groups.
Finally, the weekend of the 18th of September arrived. The students went to Jamestown to spend the day at the crèche. Many of the children at the crèche are from the coloured Jamestown community and surrounding farms. 50 students and 40 pre-schoolers were crammed into the crèche playing games and listening to music in a very festive atmosphere. Afterwards the children were treated to lunch and boxes filled with sweets and other items.
When the children were left, the real work began. Donning latex gloves, the students set out to wash and paint the walls, redecorate the interior, clean and repack the kitchen, bathrooms and storage room and upgrade the facilities. The work was performed with an air of positivity as the facilities visibly improved.
Students arrived early and stayed late to make sure that the work would be completed before the end of the weekend.
It was all worth it; the outside walls were painted with brightly coloured pictures, the inside of the crèche was cleaned and the equipment replaced. The crèche received a complete make-over, inside and out.
The many hours spent planning and working at the crèche was well rewarded by the gratitude shown by the crèche’s principal and children.

Thuthuka students get involved on campus. With the turn of the new year, Stellenbosch University welcomed a new intake of Thuthuka students. The students took part in various activities during the welcoming program, but this year the most memorable moment was when Angus Human took part in the Checkers Trollie race. The following image was published in Die Burger on the 28 February 2009.

Mnr Delano Williams het gesê hulle het besluit om die fondse in te samel omdat “History was made, as for the first time, Thuthuka Stellenbosch students gave back to the community. We also proved that we are not just a ‘Help Mekaar’ society, but also a ‘Help Ander Ook’ society and we want to keep that mentality.”
Toe Mnr Williams gevra is oor enige toekomsplanne, was sy antwoord: “Next time we will look to raise a much bigger amount as we have not at all showed the potential we have.”

In addition to being an aspirant Chartered Accountant, Raelene Adams (a 2008 Thuthutka first year student), is a multi-talented artist. Breaking the stereotypical model of a BAcc student, she writes poetry, plays saxophone and other musical instruments and actively takes part in various types of sport.
One of Raelene’s poem’s she wrote while at school, was recently published in the 2008 edition of the South African Council for English Education (SACEE) poetry/prose anthology 'English Alive'. The piece entitled "The Audition" looks at the emotions behind the career choice between Music and Accountancy and was one of the last essays written in her school career.
As the Thuthuka family, we are proud of this achievement and glad that she took the Accounting option!

The following is an excerpt from an article written by the camp leaders of the Western Cape DST/Thuthuka Maths and Science Development camp.
The full article will be published in Accountancy SA.
The DST/Thuthuka Maths and Science Development camp was held from 4 to 12 July at the Cape Academy for Maths, Science & Technology in Constantia. The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Department of Science and Technology gathered 191 grade 11 learners from various schools in the Western Cape to contribute to the development and learning and to enhance the learners chances for success in future.

The camp was managed by 25 university students from various universities across South Africa, amongst which was a group of Stellenbosch University students. The camp leaders were responsible for managing, planning and coordinating all the activities that took place daily.
As the year before, the camp was packed with fun yet important development and learning activities, which challenged the learners physically and mentally.
• During the week the learners expanded their Maths, Science and Accounting abilities with lectures, tests and a science poetry/song competition.
• Various personal development and life skills speakers gave them guidance on their purpose in life, having better study and exam techniques and communicating assertively.
• The students were also shown the world from another perspective, being introduced to Shark World, Actuarial Science World and a touch of Science or Magic.
• The learners visited the aquarium in the V&A Waterfront, played various games during the week, which culminated in Thursday evening when the students showcased their talents by performing in a talent show that left the judges with difficult decisions to make.
• The last day of the camp was concluded by a career fair and awards ceremony, to reward the learners for their achievements.
The camp had a good balance between fun and education, striving to ensure that each activity was fun, yet the learners gained something from the activities. Throughout the camp, students learned more about goals, purposes and motivations as important qualities one needs to succeed in life. The camp emphasised the importance of students knowing their purpose in life and striving towards it.

Nelson Mandela Metropolitaanse Universiteit

Some of the University of Stellenbosch Thuthuka students attended the DST /Thuthuka Maths and Science Development camp during their July holiday and this is some of their feedback, in their own words.
Chrystal Gertse
Cleo Mhlom
The DST / Thuthuka Maths and Science Development camp was held on the 8 th -14 th July at The Cape Academy for Maths and Science in Constantia. The learners arrived on the 8 th of July for a week, welcomed by the very enthusiastic camp leaders. There were 179 learners, both in grade 11 and 12 with vast backgrounds. One could see, the learners didn't know what to expect, all they knew was that they were the top learners from their respective schools. What they didn't know, was that this camp was aimed at giving them the foundation that they need to prepare them for their examination and more importantly, taking them a step closer to reaching their aspiring goals of being one of the few learners in South Africa able to attend university thereby utilising their talents.
Normal day at the camp
The camp was managed by us, 19 University students from both the University of Stellenbosch and Cape Town . The role of the leaders, was mainly to help with the managing, planning and co-ordinating of all the activities that took place daily. Our most important role, was to be role models to the learners, sharing our experiences, knowledge of tertiary education and providing learners with information on different courses we attend. An ordinary day at the camp consisted of:
- Aerobics early in the morning;
- Accounting/Science and Mathematics classes and practicals;
- Presentations by various institutions such as HIP2B 2 , SAICA were among the many;
- Games, movie night and a talent show later the week;
- A career fair and awards ceremony the Friday afternoon.

The camp emphasised the importance of students knowing their purpose in life. The students had a few sessions with: Mr Thando Melane (MaThaTo Foundations), whom helped the students define who they are and to set goals for themselves. Conre Jantjies, a grade 11 learner said “ My future is in my hands, my home background shouldn't be the reason for me not succeeding in life. ”
The camp had a good balance between fun and education, striving to ensure that each activity was fun, yet the learners gained something from the activity.
Our memories
To quote two famous Stellenbosch first year University students and camp leaders.
Cleo Mhlom, “ This camp will go down as my most memorable days, as I had so much fun. I am glad I was involved in helping to shape the lives of these learners and it's an experience I will never forget .”
Nabeelah Hendrikse, “ When I arrived at the camp I expected to be there, facilitate the activities, and help wherever I could. I had no idea that this camp would impact my life the way it has. It has given me a totally new perspective on life. It has helped me evolve, and encouraged me to stay positive.”
We, the camp leaders, believe the students now have the fundamental start they need and have realised that their attitude, will determine their altitude .
