Partnerships, alliances, relationships and sponsorships
Animal Sciences
The Department of Animal Sciences has strong partnerships and cooperative agreements with a variety of organisations in the cattle industry. A number of research projects are carried out in cooperation with the Western Cape Department of Agriculture at Elsenburg and Outeniqua each year. Postgraduate students are involved in most of these joint projects. Cooperation with foreign researchers also takes place on a continuous basis. The Department once again had good cooperation with various animal feed companies and also maintained international relationships with institutions such as the USDA Dairy Forage Research Center in Madison, Wisconsin, researchers at the Canadian Department of Food and Agriculture in Lethbridge, Alberta, Cornell University, Louisiana State University, and Carne Technologies in Nieu Zeeland. The Department maintains good relationships with other departments and cooperation takes place even across faculty and university borders. For example, the Department is involved in an Innovation Fund Project with a consortium consisting of the Department of Animal Sciences, the Department of Microbiology (SU), the Department of Microbiology (University of Limpopo), the CSIR and industrial partners Meadow Feeds and Voermol Feeds. The Department continued its contract with Louisiana State University that forms part of the “Partnerships for Food Industry Development”, a USAID programme with the aim of promoting the red meat, poultry and fish industries. This project includes cooperation with Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Mozambique and Malawi. The meat research team works with the Departments of Food Science, Consumer Science and Microbiology, as well as with various industries, such as ostrich and venison.
