Genetics and the Institute for Plant Biotechnology (IPB)
The plant geneticists in the Department cooperate with Biotech Resources Africa to express high-value nutraceutical proteins in plants. In Aquaculture there is close cooperation with the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium; Stirling University, Scotland; and the University of Auburn, USA; as well as with the Trout Producers’ Association, the Abalone Farmers’ Association, the Tilapia Producers’ Association and Irvin & Johnson; various government departments, including Science and Technology, Water Affairs and Agriculture; and Abagold, HIK, Roman Bay and Aquafarm abalone producers. In the field of Human Genetics, work is done in collaboration with the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, Oxford, UK; the University of British Columbia, Canada (iron metabolism); and the University of California, Irvine, USA (population studies for pharmacogenetics). The IPB work in collaboration with various international research centers including amongst others the Danish Polymer Centre, Risø National Laboratory in Roskilde, Denmark; University of Lille, France; School of Biological Sciences, Royal Holloway, University of London, UK; Genetwister Technologies, Wageningen, The Netherlands; Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology, Golm, Germany; Department of Plant Biology, Carnegie Institution of Washington in Stanford, CA, USA; and the Department of Developmental Cell Biology, John Innes Centre, Norwich, UK. Locally IPB work in collaboration with ARC-Infruitec-Nietvoorbij, Stellenbosch; South African Sugarcane Research Institute, Mount Edgecombe; and the Centre for Proteomics and Genomics Research, Cape Town.

The Faculty of AgriSciences is currently providing facility support to GENEdiagnostics. The company helps clients to prevent the symptoms of genetic diseases through genetic testing.
