UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME
(Medium of instruction is Primarily Afrikaans)
In order to produce scientists who can serve the livestock industry with the necessary professional skills basic scientific support is essential. The first year of study is therefore devoted to introducing the students to basic subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics. These subjects are supplemented during the rest of the first year course by Biochemistry, Animal Physiology and Genetics.
The undergraduate (bachelor's) programme leads to the B.Sc.Agric degree (field: Animal Science). The programme covers the integration of knowledge of ecology, biochemistry, physiology, nutrition, breeding, production and product quality, as well as the management of animal production systems for increased production and production efficiency in an environmentally friendly and economically efficient manner. The broad programme Animal Production Systems is divided into the following fields of study: Animal Science, Animal Science with Agronomy, Agricultural Economics with Animal Science, Aquaculture and Conservation Ecology and Aquaculture. Students following one of these fields are thus prepared for a career as a consultant, entrepreneur, manager, technician, agricultural extension officer, product development manager, production manager in animal science and related animal science industries.
