The Association for the Study of the Septuagint in South Africa has a varied history. Individual LXX conferences on aspects of the Septuagint were occasionally held in South Africa. Johann Cook occasionally invited international scholars to visit South Africa and to deliver lectures and papers. Such scholars include JW Wevers, Albert Pietersma, Martin Mulder, Emanuel Tov, Arie van der Kooij, Michael Fox, Johan Lust, Jan Joosten and Natalio Fernandéz Marcos. The first informal LXX conference was held at the University of Pretoria in 2006. The proceedings of this conference was published in JSem 2009. In November 2007 LXXSA was formally constituted at a symposium in Potchefstroom, where the current executive was elected. On 14 and 15 August 2008 another Septuagint congress took place, this time at the University of Stellenbosch, at the Wallenberg Research Centre, Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Studies (STIAS). The proceedings of this conference, including a number of additional contributions, were published as VTS 127 in 2009. In June 2009 LXXSA met at Stellenbosch in conjunction with the Joint Conference of Academic Societies in the Fields of Religion and Theology. Most of the contributions were published in Acta Patristica et Byzantina vol 20 (2009).
