Behavioural Ecology

The overall focus of our research programme is animal communication, in particular the evolution of animal signals - whether they be olfactory, acoustic or visual.  Professor Michael Cherry undertakes work in this field on birds and mammals, whereas Professor Theresa Wossler works on insects:

    Potential students should write to either Theresa Wossler or Michael Cherry, indicating their interests. Grant-holder studentships are advertised on this website when they are available. National Research Foundation (www.nrf.ac.za/studentsupport) prestigious master's and doctoral studentships close annually for the following year on August 31, and postdoctoral studentships applications on August 15. Claude Leon Foundation postdoctoral fellowship applications (www.leonfoundation.co.za) close annually on May 31. Applicants should apply in all cases in the year preceding registration, and as a rule, applications should reach the university a fortnight before each of these dates. With regard to Stellenbosch University (www.sun.ac.za/research) financial support for honours, master's and doctoral students, Harry Crossley bursary applications close on 23 September, and university postgraduate merit bursary and departmental bursary applications (www.sun.ac.za/botzoo/) in mid-November of the year preceding registration.
