Botany & Zoology
Welcome to Stellenbosch University
About the Department

The Department teaches and conducts research at postgraduate level in a variety of internationally competitive research programmes. It is a leader in the field of evolutionary biology, with a specific focus on the unique opportunities offered by Africa's biodiversity.

It is also home to the DST/NRF Centre of Excellence for Invasion Biology (CIB). The CIB aims to improve the ability, through scientific knowledge, to understand, control and manage invasive species to improve the quality of life of all South Africans.

The School for Climate Studies is engaged in developing and implementing an Africa-relevant research programme that responds to existing and emerging issues in climate change impacts, adaptation and mitigation responses, thus supporting human climate resilience

The Antarctic Legacy of South Africa’s (ALSA) aim is to preserve and promote the legacy of the South African National Antarctic Programme (SANAP) community and promote its activities. The SANAP community is fairly unique within the science environment. Preserving and promoting means honouring the past while embracing the future of the SANAP community for all South Africans.

The department is involved in social outreach within the Cape Peninsula. The Iimbovane Project, run through the CIB, focuses on building capacity in biodiversity science and providing a quality learning experience for learners and educators in communities where school capacity is limited. The Ingcungcu Sunbird Restoration project aims to heal the relationship between people, birds and plants. Gardens are being planted at local schools across the Peninsula, providing educational opportunities and allowing birds to follow historical migration routes.
