The DST Centre of Excellence for Invasion Biology (CIB) is an inter-institutional Centre concerned with the biodiversity consequences of biological invasions. It has vacancies for two post-doctoral associates commencing 1 January 2005 and lasting for two years.

1. Diversity patterns of herbivores on introduced and indigenous plants in Southern Africa

This work concerns an exploration of the evolution of herbivore diversity on indigenous and related exotic vascular plants of several families characteristic of the fynbos and other biomes. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in an appropriate ecological field, and a proven track record of sampling and identification of insect herbivores and their hosts. They should also preferably have a proven publication record in biodiversity and biogeographic research.

The successful candidate will work with David Richardson and Steven Chown and be based at Stellenbosch University.

2. Phylogeography of introduced amphibians and frogs in the fynbos biome

The work concerns range expansions and colonisations of several areas in the Western Cape by introduced amphibians and reptiles using phylogeographic methods. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in an appropriate field, and a proven track record of publication in phylogeography and molecular systematics of vertebrates. A track record of phylogeographic work with frogs and/or reptiles will be an advantage.

The successful candidate will be housed within the CIB at Stellenbosch University, but will be expected to develop a strong collaboration with Dr. C.A. Matthee in the Evolutionary Genomics Group at the University of Stellenbosch, within whose laboratory the sequencing work will be conducted.

Full research support is available for the work entailed in both fellowships for the period and this includes negotiated travel to conferences. Post-doctoral awards are for ZAR 100 000 per year and are generally exempt from taxation.

Applicants should supply a copy of their cv and transcripts and the names and contact addresses (including current e-mail addresses) of at least two academic referees by 30th September 2004. This material should reach Steven L. Chown by e-mail at first (hard copies of degree certificates and transcripts will be requested following the initial announcement of award, and final award will be dependent on their receipt).

Enquiries can also be addressed to Steven Chown. Contact: slchown@sun.ac.za and see: www.sun.ac.za/zoology/space
