Plated lizards (Gerrhosauridae; pantserakkedisse)

The plated lizards are endemic to Africa and Madagascar. They are closely related to cordylids and in the past have often been put in the same family. All are terrestrial and oviparous. With few exceptions, all have extensive distribution ranges. They have large scales underlain by thick bony plates or osteoderms and the body is slightly elongated. The genus Tetradactylus contains species with highly elongated bodies and reduced limbs. They are very secretive and are seldom seen. Eleven species occur in South Africa .
