The research initiatives in the department cover a range of topics and research areas as outlined below. The two NRF/DST Research Chairs awarded to the department – in Nanostructured Functional Materials and Advanced Macromolecular Architectures, respectively – are highlights of its important strengths. In addition, the department is also well-known for its work in separation science, in platinum group metals and catalysis, while its research programmes in Polymer Science and Chemical Biology are unique to Chemistry departments in South Africa.
