Prof Dave Richardson

Dave Richardson has been selected as a finalist in the 2008/9 National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) awards. Prof. Richardson is the Deputy Director: Science Strategy of the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence for Invasion Biology and is based at Stellenbosch University.

Dave Richardsonís research has shed new light on the dynamics of biological invasions, across several taxa, but has focussed especially on invasive trees and shrubs which occupy ten percent of South Africaís land surface and consume more than seven percent of our water resources. Prof. Richardson has developed theoretical frameworks for invasion ecology as well as interacting closely with those responsible for invasive plant management to provide practical guidelines for managing invasive species. Much of his work has concentrated on plants used in the forestry and agroforestry that pose particularly tricky problems for managers as these commercially important plants may be valuable or damaging depending on the area and situation in which they occur.

The NSTF awards honour outstanding contributions to science, engineering, technology and innovation. Individuals and groups of individuals are recognised, and Prof. Richardson has been nominated in the individual category for his contributions to the field of invasion ecology. The 11th NSTF Awards will be presented at a gala banquet on 26 May at Emperorís Palace, Kempton Park, Gauteng.
