Arie Rip obtained degrees in chemistry and philosophy at the University of Leiden, 1959-1966, and a Ph.D. (on "Social Responsibility of Chemists") at the same University (1981). He worked in the Department of Physical Chemistry at the University of Leiden, and switched to teaching chemistry and society courses in the early 1970s. He then set up a programme of research in science dynamics in collaboration with the Department of Sociology of the University of Leiden. He was guest professor of science dynamics at the University of Amsterdam (1984-1987), and is full professor in Twente since 1987. Arie Rip has been active internationally in professional societies, including being president of the (USA-based) Society for Social Studies of Science (1988-1989); in the organisation of international conferences and workshops; and in study visits, most recently to the Australian Centre for Innovation and International Competitiveness, University of Sydney, the Centre Sociologie de I'Innovation, Icole Nationale Supérierue des Mines de Paris, France (1996) and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies, University of Stellenbosch, South Africa (1996). He is scientific director of the Netherlands Graduate School of Science, Technology and Modern Culture. His research interests are in science dynamics and science policy, technology dynamics, cognitive technology policy and technology assessment, foundational issues, including sociology of controversies and risk, and the role of narrative.
