Liezel de Waal (MA (Sociology), US)
Researcher
Liezel has been involved in Stellenbosch University's Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology for a few years, first as a student, then, a lecturer-assistant and currently as a researcher. Her particular interest in the social structures and power relations in society has led to the completion of her Master's Degree in Sociology (in 2005), which looked at Information and Communication Technology initiatives. In 2006, Liezel worked as a researcher for Datadesk (also within the Department) where her focus shifted to social assistance grants in South Africa. She was involved in compiling a national profile of social assistance beneficiaries based on the first-ever national survey of its kind in South Africa. Although her interests are wide and ever-evolving, Liezel has a special interest in issues involving poverty (and its effects on vulnerable groups such as women, children and the aged), technology (insofar as it can assist in development and good governance) as well as related issues such as the information society and the digital divide.
