The Documentation Centre was established in 1997 as a means of administering and collecting the journal articles, documents and other items that were used and acquired during the various projects and courses presented by the centre. This collection was later divided into smaller collections for practical reasons and a database was created to facilitate searches.

This centre does not have lending facilities and at present only CREST staff members may remove items from the centre. Students and bona fide visitors are welcome to use and view materials in the reading room. Only CREST publications can be ordered from the Documentation Centre.

At present there are more than 3000 items that are divided into smaller collections:
· Articles
· CREST publications (formerly CENIS)
· Books
· South African Universities and Technikons
· South African Organisations – Government and other
This collection is subdivided into 3 sections namely: 1. Science Councils and Research Institutes, 2. Government Departments, 3. Other South African Organisations
· Overseas Institutions and Organisations
This collection is subdivided into 2 sections namely: 1. Overseas Universities, 2. Overseas Organisations
· Magazines and journals

CREST currently subscribes to approximately 20 journals, newspapers and newsletters.

There are also 34 other journals to which the Centre either no longer subscribes to, or of which there are only individual volumes, e.g.:
· Science and Public Policy (1996 - 2000)
