A productive year for the Language Focus Group!

1. Visit by Prof Gary Barkhuizen

In April Prof Barkhuizen (Auckland University) visited our faculty and conducted seminars with staff and students. He discussed the results of his research into the identity of Afrikaans-speaking immigrants in New Zealand.

2. Seminar on language in education

In June a simposium was held in collaboration with the Language Centre and the Centre for Teaching and Learning. The topic was the role of language in teaching and learning at Stellenbosch University. Prof Nevil Alexander of the University of Cape Town opened the simposium and several academics discussed their research on language in education.

3. Visit by Dr Sue Duncan

In August Dr Sue Duncan of Georgia State University visited the Department for a month, lecturing students, and assisting with the research design and development of a literacy project for street- and at-risk learners which will be piloted in Tereo Mission School in Somerset West, South Africa from 2005-2007. The project is in its second year and the results to date are very encouraging.

4. Visit by Prof Bonny Norton

Prof Bonny Norton of the University of British Columbia conducted a seminar with staff and students about identity and language learning.
