The venue for the conference will be the University of Stellenbosch Music Conservatorium. The conservatorium is located centrally in Stellenbosch and is within easy walking distance of all hotels and guesthouses as well as restaurants, shops and banks. Inside the venue is equiped with modern lecture facilities including data and sound projection facilities. Slide and overhead projectors will only be available on request and will not be standard in the lecture rooms.

AIG7 will consist of four full days of scientific presentations, on the Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The running of concurrent sessions will depend on the number of registrants for the conference but facilities are available to hold two concurrent sessions. Two dedicated poster sessions in the poster hall will be held during the week where poster presenters can showcase their work. The information provided below is preliminary and may change subject to the number of abstracts submitted for presentation. A detailed timetable of the daily conference program will be provided once conference themes, session convenors and plenary speakers have been confirmed

Oral Presentations
  • There will be eight Plenary Lectures, providing a synthesizing view of a self-contained area of isotope research. Each Plenary Lecture will be 30 minutes in length, plus 5 minutes for discussion.
  • Time slots for contributed oral presentations will be 20 minutes. Please prepare talks for 15 minutes in length, to allow for a 5-minute discussion and change over of presenters.
  • Conference participants may indicate their preference for an oral or poster presentation on their Registration Form. However, the Scientific Committee will make the final decision and presenters will be notified by the 30th of March, 2007.
  • Digital presentations using a data projector and power point or other electronci media will be the normal mode of presentation. An overhead projector will be available. However, any presenters wishing to use a slide projector must notify the Organising Committee as this will not be a standard facility.
  • Speakers can upload their presentations using a flash drive with a usb connection or CD.

Poster Presentations
  • Posters will be on display throughout the duration of the Symposium (Monday-Friday) in the foyer immediately outside the lecture rooms.
  • Dedicated poster sessions will form an integral part of the conference program and morning and afternoon teas will be designed to encourage conference participants to view poster information
  • Posters should be made in a vertical format, with a width not exceeding 80 cm and a height not exceeding 140 cm

The aim of the Applied Isotope Geochemistry conference series is to examine how isotopes can be used to help understand a wide variety of problems. Applied Isotope Geochemistry promotes a multi-disciplinary, multi-isotope approach to geological, environmental and biogeochemical questions. The following themes have been suggested for AIG7:

  • Evolution of the early Earth's atmosphere and environment
  • Marine Isotope Geochemistry
  • Biogeochemistry
  • Metamorphic and Igneous Systems
  • Application of isotope studies to regional mapping and understanding ore deposit genesis
  • Mass Independent Fractionation
  • Isotope Geoarchaeology
  • Isotope Hydrogeochemistry
  • Isotope Biomarkers
  • Non-Traditional Isotopes
  • Development of Techniques and Instrumentation
  • Multi-Isotope Studies
These themes will be refined as planning for the conference progresses and we welcome suggestions for additional or alternative themes. Contact the conference organisers at aig7@sun.ac.za if you have any suggestions on conference themes.

The following plenary presenters have been tentatively confirmed.
  • Dr. Richard Armstrong, PRISE, Australian National University
  • Dr Torsten Venneman, Lausanne University, Switzerland
  • Dr. Bernard Bingen, Norwegian Geological Survey
  • Dr. Ruth Blake, Yale University, USA
  • Prof Judy Hannah, Colorado State University, USA
  • Dr Greg Michalski, Purdue University, USA
  • Dr Claudio Gaucher, Institute for Geology and Palaeontology, Uruguay

Information on additional plenary presentations will be listed here as they become available. Information on the plenary presentations will be provided closer to registration.

As with previous AIG meetings, contributions are sought for a special volume of Applied Geochemistry. Should sufficient contributions be submitted on one particular topic an application may be made to Chemical Geology for publication of appropriate contributions. More details on the official conference publication will be available at the time of the second circular but conference participants are encouraged to contact the conference organisers as soon as possible should they have ideas on publications. A formal application will be made to Applied Geochemistry before the end of the year.
