The mission of the department is to: Pursue leading edge knowledge in the area of Educational Policy Studies, informed by a range of foundational approaches, novel epistemologies and methodologies, and animated by rigorous and courageous research questions;
Conduct research that deliberatively engage with broader community-based (public good) objectives and needs in tangible ways and engage in robust, collegial, dialogical research focused on issues of epistemology and knowledge creation that speaks to the practice of everyday educational life and the influence of social agency modalities.
The following are some of the research projects located in the department: A focus on education policy reform in urban context by applying the theoretical lenses of ‘policy renovation’ ‘space’ to selected qualitative methodologies and ethnographic sites.
Historical and contemporary readings of the learning experiences of young people in their transition into adult life: Narrative writing, life histories, and memory making over 50 years.
Shaping the indexed identity and re-imagining schooling and its context.
School leadership, governance, management and human resource management.
Philosophical analyses of democratic citizenship and cosmopolitan education and their pragmatic implications to address societal and global problems. These analyses also focus on higher education transformations and challenges faced by African universities.
