MACROBERT M; VILJOEN S & GROSS P. One story, many re-writes (working title). Very much in its planning stages, this research is intended to form my PhD and bring international collaboration on creative writing for and with children to South Africa. Prof Phillip Gross is one of Britain's foremost poets for adults and children, as well as a novelist for young readers and has pioneered writing in schools projects in the UK. At a recent conference in London he agreed to work with me if we can obtain sufficient funding. I intend to rework a traditional Southern Sotho folk tale into various forms for various readerships, working closely with young readers to produce a picture book, a book-length verse version and a novella for young readers. This forms part of an extension of my Masters research on the writing process and will draw in expertise from other local writers such as Dr Dorain Haarhoff and award winning children's writers Lesley Beake and Gcina Mhlope as wel as Prof Phillip Gross. The aim is to find out exactly how children learn when they reflect on their mathematical thoughts and ideas. We investigate the role of a specific type of interaction, viz. articulation (and explanation) of ideas and argumentation (challenging explanations and methods) by learners while they solve problems. We want to identify and describe facilitating strategies and other classroom features that would manage and encourage this type of interaction. REDDY CPS.
