Academic Programs

Undergraduate

Undergraduate students at Stellenbosch University can follow a three-year BSc program in Biotechnology. This program provides the basis for a career or further studies as a biotechnologist. During the first two years of the programme, broad training is provided to enable students to understand the function of living cells on the molecular level. During the third year specialisation is allowed in one of three fields.

(i) Microbial Biotechnology (microbial and fermentation subjects),

(ii) Plant Biotechnology (plant biotechnology orientated courses and optional courses in genetics and agriculture), and

(iii) Animal Biotechnology (aspects of animal production, fertilisation, transgenic animals and medical biotechnology).

The biotechnology program equips students with a solid basis in biology while focussing on the application of this knowledge. In addition, students are introduced to the essential, non-biological skills needed by a biotechnologist, e.g. commercialisation, law environment, ethics etc. Students may continue their postgraduate education in one of many directions. More information can be obtained from the web page of the School of Biology at the homepage of the school of biological sciences at Stellenbosch University.

The IPB staff and students are involved in the teaching of the following academic cources that form part of the BSc program, more information is available as a link:

Postgraduate

Being primarily a research institution our main focus is on the postgraduate studies. This includes the B.Sc. Hons program, M.Sc. and PhD programs. These programs are presented by the staff of the Institute for Plant Biotechnology (IPB), its academic home is the Genetics Department and the degree is awarded by the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
