Outcomes of the programme

On completion of this degree the student should be able to demonstrate the following skills:

  • - that she/he has an in-depth advanced knowledge of specialised theoretical information and specialised skills that are applied in practice (advanced cognitive, psychomotor and affective skills.)
  • - that she/he is able to assemble and integrate a variety of appropriate knowledge outside of the specialty field in areas such as health science technology, research, health care delivery issues.
  • - that she/he is able to study and perform research independently
  • - that she/he has internalised the appropriate academic and professional values and ethics and applies these during the programme in the academic context as well as in practice.
  • - analytical and synthesising thought processes.
  • - that she/he can participate as a specialist  nursing practitioner in the advancement of the quality of life in the direct local community, South African population and global community
  • - identifies, analyses and finds solutions for healthcare problems in the specialist area through basic research and use of critical and creative thinking.
  • - leadership within the health care team and groups in the community
  • - skills to organize and manage health care services / patient care in a responsible and effective manner.
  • - effective communication with health care services using visual, verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills.
  • - explores a wide variety of research strategies to advance scientific investigation in the health care arena.

  • - that she/he understands the principles, concepts, boundaries and limitations upon which the specialist area of study is based, as well as an understanding of the initiatives and possibilities.
  • - that she/he has a broad overview of the recent, relevant and important research in the specialist field.

  • - the ability to communicate research findings to colleagues in order to improve the service programme.
  • - that she/he can manage the challenges, demands/problems concerning professional conduct/ethics in the work environment.
  • - critical thinking and :
    • takes initiative, provides effective and convincing arguments in an intellectual debate.
    • uses well-founded theoretical judgement and valuation to identify and challenge any contradictory information, orthodox theory or practice to then propose new methods/management.
  • - that she/he has mastered an in-depth theoretical knowledge (cognitive skills) with accompanying specialist-clinical skills which further enables her/him to study and perform research at this level.

Purpose of the programme:

  • To expose the student to a specialist area in the Nursing sciences and equip the student with advanced in-depth theoretical knowledge and clinical skills to practice effectively in the chosen specialist area.
  • To promote critical-analytical thinking.
  • To complete a mini-research assignment.

Structure and duration

This program is offered trough Telematic Interactive Education. You receive study material; need to complete assignments and write examinations as indicated. Additional to the study material, interactive satellite broadcasts are done at different study centres throughout South Africa. The broadcasts will add to your understanding of the different modules and study material. However, if you cannot attend the broadcasts, you may still enter this programme and obtain videos
 
Study material and broadcasts are in English. However, examination papers are set in both Afrikaans and English, and you may answer in either of the two languages. You are also welcome to correspond in either English or Afrikaans.
 
The duration of the programme is one year.

A variety of formative and summative assessment methods are used. Each student is assessed individually through:

- assignments
- basic use of research principles and basic research project
- patient case presentations
- clinical rounds
- case studies
- clinical assessment
- written tests and exams
- assessment of psychomotor skills in the relevant specialist area.

The assessment results indicate that outcomes are achieved. Assessment of the nursing specialist in practice indicates appropriate academic depth, focus and integration of theory and practice.

Each module is assessed separately with a minimum pass mark of 50%. The performance mark of the programme is calculated based on the relative weighting of each module as indicated by the credit value for each module.

Admission requirements

For admission to the Bachelor of Nursing with Honours programme, a candidate shall hold a:
1.    Bachelor of Nursing degree
2.    Registration certificate(s) in relevant   disciplines from the South African   Nursing Council.
 
Candidates holding an appropriate BTech degree or equivalent degree from a recognised institution for tertiary education may be considered for admission to the BCurHons programme provided that:

  • Candidates shall have performed above average academically during the BTech programme
  • Candidates shall have passed a preliminary examination that:
    • Was conducted in accordance with clearly defined criteria set by the Faculty Board to ensure adequate scientific standard   
    • Was designed to assess the candidate’s theoretical background and scientific maturity     
    • Took place under the supervision of the departmental chairperson or his/her delegate as convenor with at least one other expert in the subject area appointed by the Dean    
    • Candidates shall be considered by the Committee for Post-graduate Education on their merits, with reference to a curriculum vitae and recommendation in writing from the preliminary examination committee.
