Application information
To equip the student with sophisticated knowledge and understanding of phenomena specific to the field of nursing science.
To empower the student to perform independent and advanced research.
To develop a pool of specialised nurses with the necessary clinical, management, research and educational knowledge, skills and attitude to be leaders and specialsit consultants in health care services.
You receive study material; complete assignments and write examinations as indicated. Contact on individual basis as required by student, electronic and personal communication (telephone, fax, post)
Study material and broadcasts are in English. However, examination papers are set in both Afrikaans and English, and you may answer in either of the two languages. You are also welcome to correspond in either English or Afrikaans.
Computer literacy in word processing and spreadsheet programmes as well as the use of e-mail and internet is essential.
The duration of the programme is 2 years (after a Diploma in Nursing/BCur) or 1 year (after a Honours degree in Nursing)

This module consists of 2 sub-modules:
Capita Selecta(Management; Ethics & Ethos; Law; Nursing theories) and Research(research methodology; approaches to and methods of research; planning of a research project; instruments for gathering of data research process; data analysis and presentation of results; writing a research report; other research approaches and designs)
- Nursing Science 877
From the second year the students plans and conducts research about a topic of his/her choice and writes a thesis. The degree is awarded after successful completion of the thesis. A study leader will be appointed by the Head of the Division and/or module co-ordinator to assist the student through this process.
Students doing the programme after a Hons.Degree, only conduct a research study and write a thesis.

Continuous assessment occurs during the first year with two three hour examinations where an average of 50% must be achieved for each examination. Continuous assessment during the research process in the second year as well as assessment by an external examiner on completion of the project
For admission to the Master of Nursing degree programme, a student shall-
2 year Masters’:
- hold a four –year Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing(BCur) or BCurHons degree of this University, or another equivalent qualification; OR
- hold the four-year Diploma in Nursing or equivalent, a Matriculation Certificate or certificate of exemption of the Matriculation Board, and not less than one post basic/postgraduate university diploma; shall during the diploma studies have performed above average academically; shall since obtaining the Diploma(s) have remained professionally active
1 year Masters’:
Hons.Degree in Nursing or equivalent qualification as approved by University Senate
