Who may apply for SciMathUS?

Students who wish to enter higher education in an Engineering, Health and Applied Health Sciences, Natural and Applied Natural Sciences or Economic and Management or related fields of study but who currently do not meet the entry requirements to enter higher education institutions.

You qualify to apply for SciMathUS if:

  • You have passed the NSC Grade 12 (2008 and later or will be writing the exam at the end of 2011) with a choice of subjects designated for university admission*;
  • obtained a minimum of 50% in Afrikaans or English (Home Language or First Additional Language) and 50% in any four of the other subjects designated for university admission *;
  • obtained a minimum of 30% in Mathematics and 30% in Physical Sciences or 80% in Mathematical Literacy and
  • are from a disadvantaged community and view their school or home circumstances as having had a negative impact on their performance.

* Subjects designated for university admission:
  • Accounting, Agricultural Sciences, Business Studies, Consumer Studies, Dramatic Arts, Economics, Engineering Graphics and Design, Geography, History, Information Technology, Languages (one language of learning and teaching at a higher education institution and two other recognised language subjects), Life Sciences, Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, Music, Physical Sciences, Religion Studies and Visual Arts



SciMathUS is one of the initiatives of Stellenbosch University's HOPE project as well as a flagship programme of the Division of Community Interaction.
