SPARK

The SPARK project is a school-based development and support programme for teachers and learners in Physical Sciences and Mathematics in the FET phase (Grades 10 -12) in five urban schools in the Cape Town area.
SCHOOLS

  • Westridge High School
  • Lentegeur High School
  • Aloe High School
  • Zisukhanyo High School
  • Phakama High School

IMSTUS focuses on five core elements in this project:

  • Intensive teacher training on subject knowledge (full-day training sessions by experts, teachers to be trained on prescribed content according to the NCS policy document).
  • Continuous and individual classroom support to teachers to assist them with the implementation of pedagogical skills and conceptual knowledge in their classrooms.
  • The provision of support material for teachers and learner workbooks that facilitates structured lessons.
  • Peer support groups amongst teachers in schools and in clusters where teachers share didactic and classroom management skills, set common papers, etc.
  • Establishing active extra-mural Science clubs in project schools that offer a variety of activities and which stimulate inquiring minds amongst the learners.

This initiative is part of a bigger collaborative project between the Zenex Foundation and the WCED (EMDC Metropole South). IMSTUS is the service provider in Physical Science and Mathematics in the FET phase.
