BCCSA complaints ... outside their jurisdiction

The Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa mediates and adjudicates complaints against broadcasters who accept its Code of Conduct. We looked at some complaints by the public which the BCCSA thought fell ... outside their jurisdiction

"... bad news is repeatedly broadcast."

- C Erasmus of Riebeek-Wes

Editors: Why not lodge a complaint with the robbers, hijackers, murderers and rapists?

"...most of the young announcers [on Radio Lebowa] are pathetic, especially when they present news-bulletins."

- M Galane of Pietersburg

Editors: Being "young", we're glad we don't broadcast to Pietersburg!

"...the prisoners' rights are being violated in the prison where he is kept."

- ZL Qoisashe of Mossel Bay

Editors: What are they being forced to watch?

I Gittleson of Port Elizabeth "expressed a dislike [for] the station promos 'We are One' and 'Simunye' for the SABC."

"recently the quality of Kfm has deteriorated due to, inter alia, the inclusion of news items, news reports, and station slogans."

- AN Other of Cape Town

Editors: This from a station that promises "less jabber, more Abba".

J Wutlife of Kranskop "expressed her disapproval of [Independent on Saturday editor] Kaiser Nyatsumba on [SAfm's] Microphone-in, in view of his disregard for Nigel Murphy as chairman of the show."

Editors: So much for acting independently ... even on a Wednesday!

"Transmission problems with new radio."

- JS Sibanjoni of Johannesburg

SC Bradley of Fish Hoek "enquired whether Mr Graham Hart, when giving the weather report, would not stand in front of the map, so that those in the Western Cape can see the figures for temperatures, wind speeds etc."

"Complaint about unreliable scheduling, profanities in all soap operas (supposed to be family viewing); everything revolves around sex (bad influence) and Tony Hart stands in front of the weather chart."

A List of Scottburgh Viewers

Editors: We thought that was Graham Hart.

Y Strauss of Grahamstown "would like to thank Mr Barry Ronge for screening all the old films."

Editors: Here's looking at you, kid.
