Autofill allows you to fill in several types of series by selecting cells and dragging the fill handle.

It is not necessary to type in all the information.  Autofill automatically fills the information in by using the Autofill handle.  

Excel has two types of pointers or mouses:  the big fat cross of a normal pointer and the fill handle.  Autofill uses the autofill handle.
