SOME SOFTWARE (Malati CD)

We include some software that we have found useful. These are freeware and shareware programs that we supply as is. In all cases read the installation instructions and licensing agreement included with the program. We are distributing the software within the licensing agreement, but you should realise that shareware is not free, but evaluation or demonstration copies. In most cases you may use the programs for 30 days but are expected to then register the product!

Equation

To install
All the installation files either have an "exe" or a "zip" extension:

*.exe files are self-extracting archives - simply click on the file and follow instruction.
*.zip files are compressed archives, containing several files, which you need to first uncompress (unzip). To unzip files you need to install the Winzip evaluation program if you do not already run it.
Once Winzip is installed, simply double click on a *.zip file and Winzip will unzip the files to a folder you specify. Then run the Setup.exe program and Readme documents for the program.

Note, when you open a *.zip or *.exe file, you will get the choice to open/run the file/program from its current location or to save it to disk. You can open it from its current location. If you save it to disk, take note of the full path so that you can run it from Windows Explorer.

Winzip
To install Winzip, run winzip80.exe. You will be asked for the location to install Winzip (accept the default), to accept the license agreement, to select "Wizard" or "Classic" (we recommend "Classic"), then to choose Express or Custom setup (we recommend Express) . . .

Graphmatica
You may find this graph drawing program very useful in preparing learner activities or completing assignments. If you have a computer in the classroom, it can also be productively used as a teaching aid to quickly and painlessly illustrate graphs. Here are some guidelines how to use Graphmatica as a teaching aid.

To install, click on grmat16n.zip to unpack all the distribution files. Run the setup.exe program. The installation program will ask you where to install this software and give the space requirements. The rest of the process is automated.

Graph Paper Printer
Graph Paper Printer prints or saves numerous variants of graph papers, music manuscripts, pattern papers and tables with user-defined size and colours. Very easy to use! Can be very useful for designing activities! To install, click on Gpaper.exe, a self-extracting archive.

Polynomial graphing applet
The Polynomial graphing applet is an excellent HTM based java applet that graphs and analyses any polynomial function. To install, click on Polynomial.zip and extract all the files to a folder of your choice. Then click on Polynomial.htm and wait for the applet to load.

Simply click on Grapher.htm to launch this graphing applet

Equation
This is a demonstration copy with limited functionality, yet teachers may find it useful to develop the notion of equivalent equations. To install, click on Equation.zip

Simultaneous equations
Given two linear equations in two unknowns, the computer does the calculations for you, if you tell it what to do . . . To run, simply click on Simul.exe.

Geometer's Sketchpad
This is a free demonstration version of The Geometer's Sketchpad. This version does not provide certain capabilities of the program, such as saving of sketches and scripts, copying and cutting to the clipboard, printing, and the full help file. The regular version of The Geometer's Sketchpad provides the features missing from this demo version and can be purchased from Key Curriculum Press.

To install, click on gsp310dw.zip and unzip the files to a folder of your choice.

Cabri Geometry II Demo for Windows
This is a demonstration program of the famous geometry construction package that is useful for a dynamic approach to geometry. Run wcabriuk.exe to install Cabri.

Mathematics Function Mania
Math Function Mania is a fun multimedia game that teaches functions, algebra and problem solving skills. To install, click on mathfunc.zip and unzip the files to a folder of your choice. Then execute setup.exe to run the installation program.

Curve Expert
CurveExpert 1.3 is a comprehensive curve fitting system for Windows. X-Y data can be modelled using a toolbox of models. The built-in CurveFinder sifts through every possible curve fit and ranks the fits from best to worst. Full-featured graphing capability allows thorough examination of the curve fit.

Tetris
The ever popular action game, developing geometric intuition and spatial sense.

First unzip tetris.zip to unpack all of the distribution files in a folder of your choice. Run the setup.exe program. The installation program will ask you where to install this software and give the space requirements. The rest of the process is automated! Poly
Poly is a program for investigating polyhedral shapes. Poly can display polyhedral shapes in three main ways: as a three-dimensional image, as a flattened, two-dimensional net, and as a topological embedding in the plane. The three-dimensional images may be interactively rotated and folded/unfolded. Physical models may be produced by printing out the flattened two-dimensional net, cutting around its perimeter, folding along the edges, and finally taping together neighbouring faces.
