The South African defence authorities retained possession of all military archives since the establishment of the Union Defence Force on 1 July 1912. This was confirmed by Act of Parliament (Archives Act Amendment Act, 1967). The Military Archives houses approximately 52 linear kilometres of records. The only published guide is I.J. van der Waag, ‘The South African Military Archives: a concise history and summary of the archival holdings’ in Textbook for National Higher Diploma in Archival Studies (Technikon Southern Africa, 1994). A copy may be obtained from the above address. A List of Archivalia – reflecting the entire content of the depot - may be consulted in the reading room.
