Choral Weekend for Endler Concert Series

On Saturday 12 May at 20:00, the Stellenbosch University Music Department's pre-eminent academic choir, Schola Cantorum will take to the stage with visiting guest conductor, Kåre Hanken. Supporters of Schola Cantorum will know that its founder and resident conductor Rudolf de Beer has left South Africa to work in Scandinavia, whence Prof Hanken hails. Prof Hanken, extraordinary professor in the Department of Music at Stellenbosch is no stranger to Schola Cantorum and it is fitting that while the choir is searching for a new resident music director, he bridges the gap with a programme that celebrates the collaboration between North (Norway) and South (South Africa). The varied programme juxtaposes the works of well-known South African composers, Peter Klatzow and Hubert du Plessis, with those such as Knut Nystedt and Arvo Pärt from the north, whilst also featuring Scandinavia's best-known composer Edvard Grieg.

The choral weekend will conclude with a performance of the award-winning Stellenbosch University Choir on Sunday 13 May at 16:30. The Choir will be directed by their resident conductor André van der Merwe, who is currently preparing them for their all-important tour to the World Choir Games in Cincinnati, U.S.A. At the 2010 World Choir Games in Shaoxing, China, the choir competed in two categories (Musica Contemporanea and Mixed Choirs) and won both categories. The choir was also awarded the highest overall marks in the competition and is currently is ranked as second on the world ranking list of the top 1000 international choirs by Interkultur.

Tickets @ R99 and R75 are available at Computicket outlets countrywide or on 0861 915 8000. Box office at the Endler Hall will open at 19:00 (12th) and 15:30 (13th). For further enquiries, please call the Endler Concert Series on 021 808 2343 during office hours.
