Magdalena Oosthuizen
Magdalena Oosthuizen (née Fourie) is Senior Lecturer in Singing at the Department of Music, Stellenbosch University. Since 1975, she has held various full-time and part-time teaching positions at Stellenbosch University: as lecturer in Singing in the Department of Music, lecturer in Music Education, and since 1993 she has lectured in Singing and Method of Singing. She has performed as a concert singer and as contralto soloist in various oratorios, e.g. Gloria (Vivaldi), The Messiah (Handel), St John’s Passion (JS Bach) and Elijah (Mendelssohn). Her qualifications include MMus (cum laude) (US), VDMS (Performer's Diploma in Music and Singing) cum laude (US), UTLM (Unisa Teacher's Licentiate in Music, Singing) and UPLM (Unisa Performer's Licentiate in Music, Singing) and LTCL, Trinity College, London. She has studied singing with Professor George van der Spuy (US), Madame Adelheid Armhold (Cape Town) and Professor William Reimer (Hochschule für Muzik und Theater in Hanover, Germany). The title of her MMus thesis, An investigation into the pedagogics of singing with particular reference to the Schubert Lieder as teaching material (original in Afrikaans) reveals the emphasis of her research interests. Hence her research output includes: An investigation into the singer's mind and psyche, a paper presented at the First SA Congress for the Teachers of Singing, Stellenbosch, 1991; An investigation into resonance, and head resonance in particular, Musicus, 20.1, 1992; Afrikaans terminology of singing for the revised Dictionary of Music; and a number of public lectures on Music Education, e.g. Some aspects of classroom singing and Music in the school classroom, with special reference to creativity. In 2000 she published an article, The legato-line in singing, Musicus, 28.2. In 2001 she was also responsible for the compilation of the new syllabus for singing examinations for Unisa. She published two articles: A discussion of Unisa’s technical exercises for voice and Hints on the studying of recitative, Musicus, 33.1, 2005. Besides her academic activities, Ms Oosthuizen is an examiner for Unisa, external examiner for University of Cape Town and regularly adjudicates at eisteddfods, for both solo and choral singing.
