Maria du Toit

Maria du Toit currently holds the position of principal clarinet in the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (appointed 2002). She is also part time lecturer of clarinet at the University of Stellenbosch.

In 1999 Maria completed a BMus degree cum laude at the University of Stellenbosch. During the time of her studies she was awarded numerous scholarships and prizes, including the Molteno prize for the best first year music student, the Konservatorium Stipendium for the best overall music student, as well as the Mabel Quick and Vrouevereniging bursaries. After graduating Maria furthered her studies at the Manhattan School of Music in New York (U.S.A) and the Utrecht Konservatorium in the Netherlands. Upon her return she passed the UNISA performers licentiate exam with highest honours, won first prize in the P.J. Lemmer overseas music scholarship competition (UNISA) and was appointed winner of woodwind category as well as overall winner in the ATKV forte competition (2001). In 2002 she won first prize in the Mabel Quick overseas bursary competition. Her bursaries took Maria to Bulgaria, where she studied with world renowned clarinettist and pedagogue Petko Radev in 2003 and 2004.

Apart from playing in the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, Maria also often appears as soloist, and has performed concerto's with both the CPO and the Free State Symphony Orchestras. She also performs chamber music with the country's leading ensemles, such as the Musaion Trio and the Crowson Quartet.
