Mario Nell
Mario Nell is lecturer in organ, piano and harpsichord at the University of Stellenbosch. He studied at the universities of Port Elizabeth, Stellenbosch and Cape Town where he completed his MMus Performers degree in 1998. He then furthered his studies under Zsigmond Szathmary at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg, Germany. Mario was the overall winner of the National Youth Music Competition in 1991, the Oude Meester Music Prize in 1993 and the Mabel Quick Music Prize in 1995. He received first prizes at numerous competitions, eg the National ATKV Prelude (1990 and 1991) and Forté (1994) Competitions. He has appeared as soloist all the major orchestras in South Africa. In 1999 he passed his UPLM with distinction and was the winner of the Unisa Overseas Music Bursary Competition. Mario was a prize winner during the Calgary International Organ Competition with performances in Lübeck, Germany in 1994 and Hong Kong in 1998. Besides a busy performance schedule, he is an active teacher and his students has been the overall winners of all the major music competitions in South Africa, eg the Sanlam-, Absa-, Musicon-, Johann Vos, Mabel Quick-, Unisa National Organ-, ATKV Muziq and Unisa Overseas Music Bursary Competitions.
