Niel Pauw
Niel Pauw is presently part-time lecturer in Organ at Stellenbosch University. He obtained the Diploma for Church Organists, the degrees BMus, Honors and MMus at the Stellenbosch University, followed by a later MMus cum laude in Organ at the University of Port Elizabeth, 1984. The Hanlie van Niekerk Stipendium for study abroad was awarded to him, as was the Unisa scholarship for study abroad when he obtained the Performers' Licentiate (Unisa) in Organ. His teachers include Prof Stefaans Zondagh (Johannesburg), Karl Hochreiter (Berliner Hochschule), Prof Chris Swanepoel en Boudewijn Scholten (Stellenbosch Universiteit). He taught organ at tertiary level at the Teachers' Training College, Paarl, the Staatskonservatorium , Windhoek, University of Port Elizabeth where he was promoted to Senior Lecturer, before joining the Stellenbosch Music Department in 1994 in the same capacity. He held positions as church organist at the Dutch Reformed Churches of Port Elizabeth West, Port Elizabeth Sonheuwels, Kraggakamma and (presently) Lourensrivier-Strand. He is a valued member of the Synod Commission of the DR Church in the Eastern Cape, where he conducted an investigation into the salary structures of organists in South Africa and formulated the recommendations which underpin the salary scales presently upheld by SAKOV. It was also at his recommendation to the Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church of Eastern Cape that an annual scholarship of R1000 to a UPE organ student was instituted. Niel Pauw has published "24 Koraalverwerkings vir Orrel" (Choral Preludes for Organ) and an arrangement of Hymn 182 (for Organ) and Hymn 183 (for choir), included in the DRC: OFS publication , "Met hart en mond en hande".
Niel Pauw founded the SA Fund for Organ Student in 2003. This fund is administered by the Department of Music, Stellenbosch University.
