ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
HIGHER CERTIFICATE IN MUSIC
Students obtaining the NSC in 2008 and subsequently
Admission requirements for university study in accordance with the National Senior Certificate (NSC)
In order to be able to study at Stellenbosch University in accordance with the new school curriculum for the Further Education and Training phase, students should:
- Be in possession of a National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by Umalusi
- Have a minimum standard equivalent to a Grade V/VI (Classical Music) practical examination on the main instrument (or voice) and equivalent to a Grade III/IV theoretical examination of any of the music examination bodies
- Admission is subject to a selection audition and a theoretical test in accordance with the Music Department's screening policy. This must take place either during the prospective student's Grade 12 year (or in the year preceding the first registration) during which candidates must provide proof of the abovementioned standards in classical music.
DIPLOMA IN PRACTICAL MUSIC
Students obtaining the NSC in 2008 and subsequently
Admission requirements for university study in accordance with the National Senior Certificate (NSC)
In order to be able to study at Stellenbosch University in accordance with the new school curriculum for the Further Education and Training phase, students should:
- Be in possession of a National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by Umalusi
- Have a average of at least level 3 (40-49%) in each of four school subjects (excluding Life Orientation)
- Have a minimum standard equivalent to a Grade VII (Classical Music) practical examination on the main instrument (or voice) and knowledge equivalent to a Grade III/IV theoretical examination of any of the music examination bodies.
- Admission is subject to a selection audition and a theoretical test in accordance with the Music Department's screening policy. This must take place either during the prospective student's Grade 12 year, or in the year preceding the first registration, during which candidates must provide proof of the abovementioned standards in classical music.
ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN PRACTICAL MUSIC
Specific admission requirements
Candidates must be in possession of a Diploma in Practical Music with Practical Music S 221 and 261 or an equivalent qualification in classical music as approved by the Senate.
Programme structure
Nature of the programme
One year full time. Weekly, one-on-one lessons with as many opportunities as possible to perform both publicly and within the Department of Music, under the guidance of the lecturer. Admission is subject to selection.
Note
Students are selected on a basis of ability. Those who do not have the necessary qualifications will be accepted only on condition that they undertake supplementary work.
Duration
This a a one-year programme (120 credits).

BACHELOR OF MUSIC

Admission requirements for university study in accordance with the National Senior Certificate (NSC)
In order to be able to study at Stellenbosch University in accordance with the new school curriculum for the Further Education and Training phase, students should:
- Be in possession of a National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by Umalusi
- Have an average of at least level 4 (50%) in each of the four school subjects from the list of designated subjects for university admission
- Have written the NBT (National Benchmark Tests) at least 2 weeks prior to selection date
- Have a minimum standard equivalent to a Grade VII (Classical Music) practical examination on the main instrument (or voice) and knowledge equivalent to the Grade V theoretical examination of any of the music examination bodies
- Admission is subject to a selection audition and a theoretical test in accordance with the Music Department's screening policy. This must take place either during the prospective student's Grade 12 year, or in the year preceding the first registration, during which candidates must provide proof of the abovementioned standards in classical music.
NB! Students who wish to follow the BA-PROGRAMME IN MUSIC (ROUTE: MUSIC TECHNOLOGY) must also achieve a minimum mark of 50% (Code 4) for Mathematics in die NSC.

APPLICATION PROCESS
Application into Stellenbosch University is subject to compliance with set minimum academic requirements. Before starting your application please see Entrance Requirements
- Phone US Enquiries 021 808 4515 and ask for a complete application information package or "click" on the following link http://www.sun.ac.za. An application fee is applicable.(± R100)
- After this process has been completed and you have been provisionally accepted into the university you will receive notification as well as relevant information on the departmental selection process.
- Audition Dates for 2013: (28 September & 12 October)

IMPORTANT APPLICATION DATES AND DEADLINES
- Applications open March 1st.
- Application for university admission and all under graduate programmes in music closes August 31st.
- NBT (National Benchmark Tests) : To be booked in time to write them no later than 2 weeks prior to the chosen audition date for selection. Applicable ONLY for prospective degree study.
- Hostel accomodation applications close June 30th. Application for university admission made after June 30th are not eligible for hostel accommodation.
- Late Application (after August 31st until September 30th): Late applications will only be accepted if there is still space in the particular programme.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCE FOR PROSPECTIVE APPLICATIONS

The Certificate Programme in Music
This exciting and dynamic Certificate Programme is aimed at those students who are interested in studying music, but who have not had the opportunity of studying music previously. The Programme consists of two Certificate courses, each lasting a minimum of two years: The Introductory Programme in Music, for which there is no entrance requirement, and the BMus Foundation Programme, which is a bridging course for the BMus degree (subject to the University's entrance requirements). Classes are presented in both English and Afrikaans at the Konservatorium building throughout the week during the term, and twice a week after hours to accommodate working students. Additional support is available to those students who require it in the form of Mentorships etc. This programme is also presented in Caledon and at the SA Army Base in Youngsfield, Wynberg for members of the SA Defense Force and SADC countries.
