APPLICATION PROCESS FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS FOR 2012
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL DEGREE PROGRAMMES OF THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT (Students matriculating in 2007 and previously)
Admission requirements for university study:
- Full matriculation exemption
- Performance in Grade 12: an average of 58%
- Music Grade 12: C symbol (60%) (SG) or D symbol (HG) OR
- Have a minimum standard equivalent to a Grade VII (Classical Music) practical examination on the main instrument (or voice) and knowledge equivalent to the Grade V theoretical examination of any of the music examination bodies
- Admission is subject to a selection audition and a theoretical test in accordance with the Music Department's screening policy. This must take place either during the prospective student's Grade 12 year, or in the year preceding the first registration, during which candidates must provide proof of the abovementioned standards
NB! Students who wish to follow the BA-PROGRAMME IN MUSIC (ROUTE: MUSIC TECHNOLOGY) must also have passed Mathematics Grade 12: B symbol (70%) (SG) or D symbol (50%) (HG)

STUDENTS OBTAINING THE NSC IN 2008 AND SUBSEQUENTLY
Admission requirements for university study in accordance with the National Senior Certificate (NSC).
In order to be able to study at Stellenbosch University in accordance with the new school curriculum for the Further Education and Training phase, students should:
- Be in possession of a National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by Umalusi
- Have an average of at least level 4 in each of the four school subjects from the list of designated subjects for university admission
- Pass Stellenbosch University's Access Tests (AT) successfully
- Attain an average of at least 60% of the combined AT and NSC results, in the ratio 40:60
- Have a minimum standard equivalent to a Grade VII (Classical Music) practical examination on the main instrument (or voice) and knowledge equivalent to the Grade V theoretical examination of any of the music examination bodies
- Admission is subject to a selection audition and a theoretical test in accordance with the Music Department's screening policy. This must take place either during the prospective student's Grade 12 year, or in the year preceding the first registration, during which candidates must provide proof of the abovementioned standards
NB! Students who wish to follow the BA-PROGRAMME IN MUSIC (ROUTE: MUSIC TECHNOLOGY) must also achieve a minimum mark of 50% (Code 4) for Mathematics in die NSC.

MMus
The MMus programme develops research skills by means of either a 100% thesis or a 50% thesis. The latter programme structure includes either public concert performances or compositions. Admission for performance options (solo, composition, accompaniment, chamber music, conducting) is subject to auditions. Additional supplementary work may be required.
MPhil Music Technology
The programme, a combination of taught modules and research, requires at least two years of full-time study. It focuses on the development of advanced practical and research skills in the technical sound domain, and on software in the broader music field.
PhD
This programme consists of a dissertation and an oral examination. Supplementary work may be required. The study can consist of exclusively theoretical work, or can be an integrated study of creative processes (such as public performances or composition) and theoretical work to be reported in the dissertation.
Advanced Certificate in Education (Music) (ACE)
This part-time, non-residential, two-year programme consists of block sessions during school holidays and on Saturdays during school terms.

US Konservatorium
The Certificate Programme in Music
This exciting and dynamic Certificate Programme is aimed at those students who are interested in studying music, but who have not had the opportunity of studying music previously. The Programme consists of two Certificate courses, each lasting a minimum of two years: The Introductory Programme in Music, for which there is no entrance requirement, and the BMus Foundation Programme, which is a bridging course for the BMus degree (subject to the University's entrance requirements). Classes are presented in both English and Afrikaans at the Konservatorium building throughout the week during the term, and twice a week after hours to accommodate working students. Additional support is available to those students who require it in the form of Mentorships etc. This programme is also presented in Caledon and at the SA Army Base in Youngsfield, Wynberg for members of the SA Defense Force and SADC countries.
