The
purpose of the symposium is to bring together ALC grant holders and
partners from across Africa, and students at South African universities
who are working in the various ALC sponsored projects. The
workshop programme is designed to facilitate student presentations and
interaction with project
leaders. Time is allocated for getting to know one another and to
exchange ideas and to share knowledge. The format of
the workshop will be as follows:
-
Each
project leader will have the opportunity to introduce the project, followed by a student presentation (Total
time allocated 20 minutes).
-
Additional project presentations in the form of posters.
-
A
limited number of rental pool student presentations will also be
accommodated.
-
Three
keynote speakers will also address delegates.
The Conference venue is the Safari Court Hotel, Windhoek,
Namibia. The fact that the workshop is limited to ALC associated
researchers and students, will encourage interaction between grant
holders and students. |

Prof.
Thomas Feurer |
Title of
talk:
Coherent THz spectroscopy and imaging |
Prof Thomas Feurer was
born in Kempten, Germany, in September 1963. He received his
Diploma in Physics from the University of Wuerzburg, Germany
in 1990. He then moved to the Rice University in Houston,
Texas, where he worked on optically induced percolative
phase transitions. He earned his PhD degree in Physics in
1994 at the University of Wuerzburg. In 1994 he went to the
University of Jena and worked on ultrafast linear and
nonlinear optics, femtosecond spectroscopy and coherent
control of quantum systems, high-power short-pulse
laser-matter interaction at relativistic intensities,
generation of femtosecond hard X-rays and femtosecond
time-resolved X-ray diffraction. He received the
Habilitation in 2001 and moved to the M.I.T. in Cambridge,
USA. His research interests were: High-frequency acoustic
spectroscopy, ultrafast optics and pulse-shaping, nonlinear
spectroscopy of liquids and solids, coherent control of
collective excitations in solids, generation of
phase-matched high harmonics, EUV nonlinear femtosecond
spectroscopy. In 2002 he was appointed Research Associate at
the M.I.T. and in 2004 he became full professor at the
University of Bern, Switzerland. His current research
interests are in ultrafast lasers and fiber optics,
ultrafast coherent control and nonlinear spectroscopy. He
has published more than 80 journal papers and holds several
patents. In 1997, he received the Carl Zeiss Research Award,
in 1999 the Werner-von-Siemens Medal, and in 2001 he was
awarded with a Max-Kade Fellowship. Thomas Feurer is a
member of the Optical Society of America (OSA) and the
American Physical Society (APS). |

Dr. Alexander Heidt
|
Title of
talk:
A Special Kind of White Light |
Dr Alexander Heidt is a
Laser Physicist with specialisation in nonlinear fiber
optics, supercontinuum generation and fiber laser
development. He received his Ph.D. / Dr. rer. nat. in
Physics summa cum laude, (highest distinction) from the
Friedrich-Schiller Univ. Jena, Germany & Univ. of
Stellenbosch, South Africa as a bi-national degree (Cotutelle).
He received the Marie Curie Individual Research Fellowship
of the European Union FP7 Project Grant “ADMIRATION” and is
since January 2012 a research fellow in Mid-Infrared
Photonics at the Optoelectronics Research Centre, University
of Southampton, UK. |

|
Prof. Mourad Zghal |
Title of
talk:
Supercontinuum generation
in photonic crystal fibers |
Prof Mourad Zghal
received his Ph.D in electrical engineering from the
National Engineering School of Tunis (ENIT-Tunis El-Manar
Univ.) in 2000. He is actually associate professor at the
Engineering School of Communication of Tunis (Sup’Com-Univ.
of Carthage). Dr. Zghal founded and is in charge of the “new
photonic devices for optical network’’ group in Sup’Com. He
has published more than 100 papers in areas that include
integrated nonlinear optical devices, design and
characterization of photonic crystal fibers, and nonlinear
propagation of ultrashort laser pulses. He also served at
numerous program or steering committee of international
scientific conferences. In addition to his research
activities, Dr. Zghal has been extremely active in promoting
photonics in Tunisia and Africa. He is the founder and
treasurer of the Optical Society of Tunisia, a member of the
ICO family. He also founded the African Laser Center, an
organization encouraging exchange of researchers and
students across Africa. Dr. Zghal has been awarded the 2008
ICO/ICTP Gallieno Denardo prize for “his original work in
the development of numerical modelling techniques for
photonic crystal fibres, and for his active commitment aimed
at the diffusion of research in optics in Africa”. Dr. Zghal
is senior member of OSA and SPIE. |
