The purpose of the symposium is to bring
together ALC grant holders and partners from across Africa, and students
at South African universities who are working in the various ALC
sponsored projects. The workshop programme is designed to facilitate
student presentations and interaction with project
leaders. Time is allocated for getting to know one another and to
exchange ideas and to share knowledge. The format of the workshop will
be as follows:
- Each project leader will have the
opportunity to introduce the project, followed by a student presentation
(Total time allocated 20 minutes).
- Additional project presentations in the
form of posters.
- A limited number of rental pool student
presentations will also be accommodated.
- Three keynote speakers will also address
delegates.
The Conference venue is on the Zevenwacht
Wine Estate in the Stellenbosch District. The fact that the workshop is
limited to ALC associated researchers and students, will encourage
interaction between grant holders and students. |

Prof. Tony Parker
From Time-Resolved
Raman Spectroscopy to
Spatially Offset Raman Spectroscopy.
Excited DNA. |
Prof Tony Parker joined the CLF in 1987, Head of the LSF
between 1995 and 2010, stepping down to focus more on
research and his STFC Fellowship. Authored over 210
publications. 5 Patents relating to Raman Spectroscopy. Over
20 years experience in applying spectroscopy, time-resolved
spectroscopy and imaging to study the structure-function
relationship in chemistry and more complex biological
systems, particularly in relation to DNA dynamics/damage and
repair and electron/energy transfer.
His research activity is dedicated to the characterisation
of reaction intermediates using time-resolved spectroscopy
(mainly Raman, infrared, 2D-IR). Time resolved
fluorescence/Raman imaging of biological and chemical
systems and the development of Spatially Offset Raman
Spectroscopy for the diagnosis of disease in collaboration
with the Royal Orthopedic Hospital, Stanmore.

Prof. Heinrich Schwoerer
Ultrafast
Charge Transfer Dynamics in Dye
Sensitized Solar Cells. |
Prof. Heinrich Schwoerer has a Diploma in Physics of
the University of Heidelberg, Germany, a Ph.D. from the
Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, Switzerland and a
Habilitation in Experimental Physics from the University of
Jena, Germany.
Since September 2007 he is a South African Research
Professor (tier 1) for Photonics at the University of
Stellenbosch, South Africa. Currently is the director of the
Laser Research Institute at the University of Stellenbosch.
His scientific interests are the fields of ultrafast
spectroscopy with laser and electron pulses, phase
transitions and structural dynamics in inorganic and organic
molecular solids and ultrafast reaction dynamics in complex
molecular systems.

Dr Zephania Birech
Ultrafast
dynamics of excited states in molecular
crystals: The case of tetracene ultrathin single
crystals. |
Dr Zephania Birech received his B.Ed (Sc) and M.Phil
(Physics) from the Moi University, Kenya. In 2012 he got his
Ph.D (Physics) from the Stellenbosch University, South
Africa. 2002-2009 he was Maths/physics high school teacher
and since 2013 lecturer in physics at the University of
Nairobi, Kenya. His research interests are ultra-fast
exciton dynamics in molecular crystals and optical
characterization of aflatoxins and remote sensing of
aflatoxin producing fungi in cereals.

Prof Andrew Forbes
Towards
the all-digital control of light.
1,2,3 …. infinity: High-dimensional quantum
entanglement made easy. |
Prof Andrew Forbes received his PhD (1998) from the
University of Natal, and subsequently spent several years
working as an applied laser physicist, first for the South
African Atomic Energy Corporation and then later in a
private laser company where he was Technical Director. He is
presently Chief Researcher at the CSIR National Laser
Centre, and is the Research Group Leader for Mathematical
Optics. Andrew sits on several international conference
committees, is a referee for all the major optics journals,
chairs SPIE international conference on Laser Beam Shaping
and is the chair of the OSA technical group on Diffractive
optics and holography. He is a Senior Member of the OSA, a
Fellow of SPIE, and holds honorary Professorships at the
University of Stellenbosch and the University of Kwazulu-Natal;
in addition, he sits on the Steering Committee of the
Photonics Initiative of South Africa (PISA) – a new
programme to drive photonics in South Africa. He has
published over 200 research papers, and is engaged in
several international collaborations.
Andrew's research interests include laser resonators,
structured light, orbital angular momentum, vortex beam and
non-diffracting light.
