Qualifications:
Ph.D (Dalhousie, Canada); MA (Stellenbosch); BA (Hons.) (Rand Afrikaans University).

Teaching specialisation:
Introduction to International Relations; Theories of International Relations; State, Economy and Development; The Political Economy of Asia (with a focus on Malaysia)

Research interests:
South African foreign policy; the political economy of globalisation.

Academic history:
Before his appointment at Stellenbosch, Dr. van der Westhuizen held a number of contract teaching and research positions with the Universities of Natal (Durban), Western Cape, South Africa, Dalhousie and Stellenbosch. 

He has published in Global Governance, Politikon: South African Journal of Political Studies, Third World Quarterly and The South African Journal of International Affairs.

He is currently the coordinator of the BA (International Studies) Programme at Stellenbosch University.
