Prof Jan Gerris, full professor in family research at Radbout University at Nimegen University in the Netherlands visited the Department of Psychology in May. Prof Gerris, a former dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Nijmegen, received several awards for his research (e.g. from the Universities of Leuven and Jyvaskyla), and is a co-founder and currently president of the European Society on Family Relations (ESFR). His research focuses on the role of personality in family relations and parenting. He is also project leader of the Nijmegen part of the European Commission’s FamWork project, which is carried out in eight European countries.
Prof Gerris visited the Department of Psychology as the Dutch collaborator of Prof Awie Greeff’s SANPAD funded research project on Family Resilience in Different Ethnic Groups. They visited two sites of this project, at the University of Fort Hare in Alice and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth. Prof Gerris also presented two lectures in the Department of Psychology, outlining his research on family relations and work.
