The Central Analytical Facility (CAF) is a concept whereby analytical equipment with a broad user base is managed independently to ensure optimal utilisation and service to the research community of Stellenbosch University, and the South Africa research and development sector in general.

Operational units are orientated around Applications Specialists who provide advice to potential users on the relevant technique, perform analyses for clients, train users to perform their own analyses and ensure good maintenance, calibration and performance of the equipment. Each unit is also supported by a responsible academic member of staff who generally assists with management of the unit, but in some cases, may also be involved with routine running of the facility.
