Bernard Dubbeld lectures critical social theory, gender, and labour studies. His previous research concerned the consequences of the technological transformation of work and the character of politics among Durban's dockworkers. He is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Chicago, and his research examines the structuring and expression of aspiration in post-proletarian KwaZulu-Natal. He is also interested in ideology, which he understands to be enmeshed in all social practice, the production of ‘difference' and ‘sameness', and history and temporality as they are locally articulated. In the department, he is concerned with developing conceptually rich and nuanced qualitative research among students.
