Welcome to Teaching Matters @ SU 4(1)

This issue of Teaching Matters @ SU contains an exclusive on Professor Russel Botman, Rector and Vice-Chancellor of Stellenbosch University who was interviewed regarding the notion of a “pedagogy of hope”. We look at what lecturers are doing in their classrooms, including three case studies on individual lecturers and their teaching practices and innovations. Also in this issue is a list of published papers on teaching published in 2006 by staff of Stellenbosch University with links to the various papers. In this pre-conference issue the notion of scholarship of teaching and learning is explored in anticipation of the 3rd annual Scholarship of Teaching and Learning conference hosted by CTL during May 2009. From humble beginnings as a teaching day in 2005, this annual event has grown to one of the best attended features on the Centre for Teaching and Learning’s yearly calendar. The interest and participation in this event, which provides an opportunity for Stellenbosch University academics to share their scholarly and innovative work in the area of teaching, keeps exceeding expectations. Each year, participants and organizers leave the event encouraged by the creativity and sincerity with which academics approach their job as teachers.

With powerful keynote speakers and a full programme, including informative panels, round table discussions and new, innovative and reflective work by SU academics, this year’s conference promises to be no different. If you have not yet registered, please take a moment to visit the conference web site and do so immediately.

The issue of Teaching Matters @ SU published later this year will focus more specifically on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning conference. The abstracts of the papers presented at the conference will be included amongst other articles for publication.

What is Teaching Matters @ SU?

Teaching Matters @ SU is an online journal that is published by the Centre for Teaching and Learning at Stellenbosch University.  It is published bi-annually and offers an opportunity for discussion regarding current teaching and learning issues and debates on campus.  Lecturers, tutors and other teaching and learning role-players are encouraged to participate by writing short feature and “snapshot” articles on their teaching experience and research initiatives.

All articles will be published in the language in which they are received, with the exception of the feature articles and interviews, which will be available in both Afrikaans and English.
