Protestant pastorate expert lectures at SU Theology

Prof Ruard Ganzevoort of Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, Netherlands, will visit the Faculty of Theology of Stellenbosch University to offer three lectures:

Tuesday 16 August, 09h00 to 11h00
Dealing with diversity. Culture, gender and sex (Room 1006)
Wednesday 17 August, 09h00 to 11h00
Pastoral care and sexuality (Hofmeyr lecture hall)
Thursday 18 August, 08h30 to 11h00
Domestic and sexual violence in the family (Boardroom)

The lectures will all take place in the Faculty of Theology, 171 Dorp Street. Admission if free, everyone welcome!

The significance of Belhar for the church in Belgium and Europe

The United Protestant Church of Belgium was the first church besides the URCSA to accept the Confession of Belhar. A group from this church including Dr Egbert Rooze and Rev Marc Loos will be visiting the Faculty of Theology at Stellenbosch University to discuss the importance of Belhar and their acceptance of Belhar for the UPCB and wider.

Conference on Law and Religion in SA

You are hereby invited to a conference on Law and Religion in South Africa which will take place at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Stellenbosch from 20-23 September 2011, as well as the annual general meeting of the South African Council for the Promotion and Protection of Religious Rights and Freedoms

Influential German theologian at Theology in September

The influential German theologian and expert on Weber, Prof Eckart Otto from Munchen, will address a lunch hour seminary on the subject: "Max Weber on Ancient Judaism, Calvinism and modern market economy".

HISTORY

When Jan van Riebeeck landed on 6 April 1652 at what today is known as Cape Town, a Dutch colony was founded by the Verenigde Oos-Indiese Companjie (United East-India Company).

On November 8 1679, the Dutch Governor Simon van der Stel traveled inland and camped on a small island surrounded by sparkling streams and beautiful tall trees, the site of the present Faculty of Theology. He named the river Eersterivier (First River) and the area, Stellenbosch.

In 1685 Commissioner Baron van Rheede visited the "colony" of Stellenbosch and stipulated that a drostdy (magistrate's court and residence) be erected on the island of Stellenbosch and a town be laid out. On October 22, 1686 the first brick of this first building was laid, and was completed in April 1687 as the magistrate's court as well as the residence of the first magistrate, Johannes Mulder. The 1710 "Van Staden sketch" shows a U- or T-shaped building, which apparently was quite large, because Van der Stel and his entourage often lodged here. more...
