Background
Dirkie Smit was predikant en doseer daarna vir bykans twintig jaar teologie aan die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland. Hy is lidmaat van die VGKSA en betrokke by verskeie kerklike aktiwiteite, ook ekumenies. Hy doseer Christelike dogmatiek, word dikwels genooi vir openbare optredes en skryf gereeld, ook akademies. Dertig doktorale studente het by hom proefskrifte voltooi van wie meer as twintig later self dosente word in talle lande, insluitende Namibië, Malawi, Zambië, Kenia, Ghana, Nigerië en die VSA, in verskeie akademiese dissiplines. Hy ontvang talle toekennings en is lid van nasionale en internasionale liggame (waar onder Navorsingsgenoot van die Humboldt Stigting, Navorsingsgenoot van die Center of Theological Inquiry in Princeton en Navorsingsgenoot van die Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlyn, was assessor van evalueringspanele van die NNS en is steeds beoordelaar van die Templeton Prize for Theological Promise). In 2008 ontvang hy die D.Phil (h.c) van Umea, Swede.
