Laureate head of Neptune, trident behind.
Neptune
Diademed head of Neptune, trident behind.

Originally Neptunus was known as a freshwater divinity. Under Greek influence he eventually became a sea-god and was identified with the Greek god Poseidon. Roman coins usually depict Neptune bearded, laureate or diademed, with a trident behind his head.

Full length images show him standing, holding a dolphin, a trident and cloak as depicted on the reverse of an as (right) issued by Caligula in honour of his grandfather Agrippa, naval commander at the battle of Actium. Neptune is sometimes also depicted holding a prow ornament of a galley (acrostolium) which he either displays next to him or rests his foot on. The image of Neptune on Roman coins appears from the time of Pompey the Great until that of Julian II.
