AE antoninianus, P Licinius Egnatius Gallienus, AD 253 - 268 |
Obv. Radiate Gallienus right, GALLIENVS AVG. This powerful portrait image of Gallienus is similar in coin design to coin portraiture of the Tetrarchs. The solid neck is out of proportion to emphasise the radiate crown of the emperor. Gallienus is portrayed with long hair - this differentiates the period of his sole rule since AD 260. The hair is shown as long comma-shaped locks, curling back around the neck, also curling above his forehead, with a crude curly full beard in high relief. Rev. Sol standing, holding whip, ORIENS AVG. |
