Half-follis, Maurice Tiberius, AD 582 - 602

Flavius Mauricius Tiberius Augustus succeeded Tiberius II Constantine in AD 582 as emperor and appointed his son Theodosius in AD 590 as co-emperor. Maurice assisted Khosrau II in regaining the Persian throne thus ending hostilities with Persia. He also campaigned successfully against the Sassanids, Avars and Lombards and was acknowledged for his administrative reforms and accomplishments as statesman. In AD 602 an usurper, the general Phocas, had Maurice and his son executed. Phocas succeeded to the throne and plunged the empire into a new war with Persia.
