AE dupondius, Gaius Julius Verus Maximus I, AD 235 - 238 |
Gaius Julius Verus Maximus I, the son of Maximinus I, was appointed Caesar and princeps iuventutis in AD 236 by his father. Both father and son were assassinated by the praetorian guard in AD 238. They were succeeded by the senators Pupienus and Balbinus. The obverse legend belongs to the coinage issued in AD 238, the year when six emperors (Maximinus I Trax, Maximus I, Gordian I and Gordian II, Balbinus and Pupienus, Gordian III) were recognised as rulers.
