AE follis, Maximinus II (Daia), AD 309 - 313 |
Gaius Valerius Galerius Maximinus II, commonly known as Maximinus Daia or Daza, the nephew of Galerius, was adopted by Galerius and appointed Caesar in AD 305. Maximinus Daia was promoted to the rank of Augustus in AD 309 and defeated the Persians in the same year. After his defeat at Heraclea by Licinius in AD 313, Maximinus committed suicide at Tarsus. Coin portraiture of Maximinus shows the typical abstract presentation of the emperor in the time of the tetrarchy when individual portraiture became more abstract and depicted the emperor as symbol. Here, the face of Maximinus does not reflect his actual features, but shows smooth composed features, the hair and beard, chin and forehead neatly placed within a pre-set frame. Obv.
