Securitas, the personification of safety and confidence of the state or present reign, appears from the time of Nero on imperial coinage. For the purpose of propaganda she always appears with a relaxed pose, either seated, with an altar at her feet, holding a short sceptre and globe, or standing with legs crossed and leaning with her elbow on a column. Sometimes she stands holding her robe, a long sceptre, a wreath or a branch as depicted on the reverse of this AE3 of Helena. The message of safety and security also appears as a legend on other imperial reverse types: SECVRITAS IMPERII (empire) TEMPORVM (the period) PERPETVA (perpetual) or occasionally in an abbreviated form SECVR ORB (the world). |
